Trending words

Surprise and impress those around you as you add these trending words to your vocabulary. Make sure you know what they ‘really’ mean before you use them though!

1. Pandect (a complete body of the laws of a country)

If the government indifferently accepted a complete body of laws as the common law of Germany, they probably accepted a pandect.

2. Pruner (tool used to trim/remove unwanted parts of trees, shrubs etc.)

If branches are too large to be cut by hand or lopping shears, a trimming tool must be used to remove the unwanted parts of a tree. This can be done with a pruner!

3. Drinking Fountain

If you’ve just quenched your thirst with a device producing a small jet of water for drinking, you just used a drinking fountain!

4. Selenic (pertaining to selenium, the chemical element of atomic number 34)

Many studies have shown that supplemental selenic compounds have cancer-preventive properties.

5. Adiaphorous (neutral or indifferent)

If you are not really for, or opposed to an issue, you are most probably being very adiaphorous.

The #DeepVeer reception

Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone hosted their first wedding reception on Wednesday. The duo reached Deepika’s hometown Bengaluru the day before for the grand reception for close friends and family in the bride’s hometown. In attendance were close friends and family members of the couple along with a few sports stars. The newlyweds looked majestic in their attires, as they enjoyed the night at The Leela Palace. Deepika wore a sari gifted to her by her mother – it was another Sabyasachi creation, as was her wedding dress. Ranveer sported a Rohit Bal Sherwani.

The happy couple also obliged the media by posing for them first and then proceeding to take selfies with their guests. Deepika and Ranveer will soon fly down to Mumbai to host three other parties for their friends and relatives in the city. Bollywood celebrities are expected to join the couple in their wedding celebrations on December 1 at the Grand Hyatt. The other two receptions will take place on November 24 and November 28.

Imran Khan & Trump’s Duel of Words – Press has a Field Day

United States President Donald Trump’s tirade against Pakistan made headlines in numerous local and international publications. “They don’t do a damn thing for us,” said Trump about Pakistan in an interview on Fox News Sunday to anchor Chris Wallace. The US president’s remarks came after he tried to defend his government’s decision to reduce military aid for Pakistan. During the interview, Trump claimed that Pakistan, despite knowing the whereabouts of Osama Bin Laden, harboured the terrorist in Abbottabad before the US commandos eventually gunned him down in a raid in 2011.

The verbal duel between the two leaders escalated when Prime Minister Imran Khan retaliated and highlighted that Pakistan is among the few allies who suffered 75,000 casualties in the US War on Terror in Afghanistan.

The Leaning Tower of Pisa … Standing Back Up!

What if we told you that The Leaning Tower of Pisa will not remain leaning for too long. Going against the thing it is known for, the tower is reportedly stable now and has even straightened slightly thanks to engineering work to save it. The medieval tower, a symbol of the power of the maritime republic of Pisa in the Middle Ages, has leaned to one side ever since building started in 1173. The tower’s Surveillance Group — set up to monitor restoration progress of the world-renowned tourist attraction — said in a statement that after 17 years of observation “the Tower of Pisa is stable and very slowly reducing its lean.”

Engineering Professor Nunziante Squeglia of Pisa University said that the 57-metre (186-feet) monument had straightened by four centimetres (1.5 inches), Italian media reported. The Tower was closed to the public in January 1990 for 11 years over safety fears, as its tilt reached 4.5 meters (15 feet) from the vertical. It has since been straightened by more than 40 centimetres.

The High Achiever

Krishna Kumari

Pakistan’s human rights activist and senator Krishna Kumari has been named in the annual BBC 100 Women list that honours the achievements of 100 inspiring and influential women from around the world every year. The 39-year-old belongs to the Kohli community from the remote village of Dhana Gam in Nagarparkar and was elected as senator in March this year after spending many years working for the rights of bonded labourers in the country. She is the first Thari Hindu woman to be elected to the Pakistan senate.

Speaking about the honour, Kumari said, “I belong to the Kohli community, which has been suppressed by landlords and forced to work as slaves since time immemorial. I am very proud to have my efforts honoured by the BBC. I hope it serves as a message to those who believe that minority groups do not need to be given their rights.”

Kumari’s endeavours to end bonded labour in Pakistan are fuelled by her own childhood experience of being forced to work with her family by a landlord in Umerkot for three years before being rescued in a police raid. After they were released from bonded labour, her parents encouraged her to study, supporting her from primary classes in Umerkot and Mirpurkhas to a postgraduate degree in sociology from the University of Sindh, Jamshoro.
