Tired of the usual catfights and conspiracies? Dive into Noor Jahan, where sisterhood and empowerment steal the spotlight, making it the must-watch drama of the season!

Noor Jahan diverges from the traditional saas-bahu drama formula, where the mother-in-law is usually depicted as a schemer and the daughter-in-law as a victim of her plots. Instead, this drama offers a fresh narrative by focusing on how women can support and uplift each other, rather than competing against or undermining one another. In Noor Jahan, the bahus are not involved in revenge schemes or portrayed as merely submissive. Instead, they are shown taking care of themselves and each other, fostering a sense of empowerment and solidarity. This shift from the usual portrayal of women enduring cruelty and hardship from their in-laws is both refreshing and inspiring.
1. Safeena’s Early Warnings And Insights
At the beginning of their marriages, Safeena warns Noor Bano and Sumbul about Noor Jahan’s true nature, emphasizing that she is far more ruthless and cruel than she appears. Safeena’s warnings stem from her own years of suffering under Noor Jahan’s tyrannical rule. She expresses a deep concern for her sisters-in-law, wanting to protect them from experiencing the same hardships. In episode 14, while having a cup of tea with Sumbul and Noor Bano, Safeena warned them by saying, “Hamdardi, Mohabbat, yeh lafz un ki lughatt mein nahi hain. Na hi woh kisi se hamdardi kar sakti hain, aur na hi mohabbat.”
Initially, Noor Bano and Sumbul find it difficult to fully grasp Safeena’s perspective. However, as time passes, they come to realize the accuracy of Safeena’s warnings. Noor Jahan’s behavior, fueled by her resentment and a sense of injustice due to her own marginalized status, perpetuates a cycle of cruelty. The realization of Noor Jahan’s true nature reinforces Safeena’s role as a protector and highlights the systemic injustices faced by women in this household.
2. Safeena Consoling Sumbul
One of the most moving moments in Noor Jahan is Safeena’s response to Sumbul’s distress when Maha, Safeer’s second wife was revealed pregnant. Despite being sidelined by Safeer, Sumbul recieves unconditional support from Safeena. Safeena recognizes that Sumbul, like herself, comes from a middle-class background, and returning to her parents’ home is not an option, particularly since Sumbul’s parents are deceased and her uncle and aunt had married her off to rid themselves of responsibility. Safeena’s words to Sumbul in episode 24 by saying, “Ziyadah se ziyadah kia hoga, talaq hojayegi? Ghar tut jayega, khatam hojayega, tumhe nikal dein gaye. Is ka matlub bilkul bhi yeh nahi hai kay tum akeli hojaogi, ya tumhari zindagi khatam hojayegi. Buhat si aisi aurtein hain, jin ki shaadiyan khatam hojati hai lekin woh zindah bhi hain, aur khush bhi.”
Safeena not only consoles Sumbul but also reassures her that she will always be there for her, no matter how difficult the circumstances. She stresses that despite the harsh situation, they are in this together and that their shared struggles can be a source of strength. Safeena goes beyond emotional support by helping Sumbul recognize her own capabilities. She goes on to request Noor Bano to help support Sumbul, thus forming a sister-hood of sorts between the three.
3. Noor Bano & Safeena Uplifts Sumbul
Noor Bano & Safeena plays a crucial role in empowering Sumbul, especially after Noor Jahan assigns Sumbul to care for Maha’s child and manage household duties. This assignment reflects Noor Jahan’s and Safeer’s view of Sumbul as no more than a housekeeper, despite her status as Safeer’s first wife. Noor Bano & Safeena intervenes, recognizing the injustice and cruelty inherent in Noor Jahan’s treatment of Sumbul. In episode 26, Noor Bano says to Sumbul, “Koch khatam nahi hoa. App k agaye abhi buhat badi zindagi padi hai. Aise beqadray logon k liye apni zindagi ko zaya mat kareen. Humesha wahan jain ajahn app ki qadar ho.” Safeena also adds, “Duniya bhari padi hai qadardanon se. Bahir jao apni zindagi banao, job dhondo, koch na koch karo.”
Noor Bano & Safeena’s support for Sumbul is both practical and motivational. Noor Bano acknowledges Sumbul’s educational achievements and encourages her to leverage her skills and degree to pursue a better future. Noor Bano & Safeena advocates for Sumbul to stand up against the injustices of Safeer’s arrogance, Maha’s rudeness, and Noor Jahan’s cruelty. They urge Sumbul to assert her rights and explore opportunities outside the oppressive environment of Noor Jahan’s household. Noor Bano’s intervention culminates in securing Sumbul a corporate job through her network, facilitating Sumbul’s departure from the toxic environment. Sumbul’s decision to leave and build a life on her own terms is a significant turning point, highlighting Noor Bano’s impact in helping her reclaim her independence and self-worth.
4. Noor Bano’s Support for Safeena
Noor Bano’s empathy extends to Safeena, who, as she approaches her delivery, is increasingly vulnerable due to her deteriorating health and Noor Jahan’s harsh treatment. Noor Jahan’s disdain for Safeena, especially because she is expecting a baby girl, exacerbates Safeena’s suffering. Safeena is subjected to additional hardships as Noor Jahan ignores her needs and continues to demand that she perform household chores. Noor Bano in epsiode 25, tells Safeena, “App bethein, balke nahi app kamray mein jain, bartan mai dho doongi. Thode se batan hain mei dho deiti hoon, app fikar na kareen. Chalein jain app. App rest kareen.”
Noor Bano steps in to alleviate Safeena’s burdens. She takes over tasks that were primarily Safeena’s responsibility, such as washing dishes, and encourages Safeena to rest and take care of herself. This act of kindness and solidarity from Noor Bano highlights the contrast between her nurturing nature and Noor Jahan’s cruelty. Noor Bano’s willingness to support Safeena during this difficult time exemplifies her commitment to sisterhood and care, underscoring the importance of female support networks.
5. Noor Bano’s Offer to Sumbul
After Sumbul decides to leave Noor Jahan’s oppressive household, Noor Bano offers her a place to stay at her paternal home. This gesture reflects Noor Bano’s kindness and mirrors the generosity of her own father. By providing Sumbul with a safe space to live and rebuild her life, Noor Bano demonstrates a profound sense of compassion and support. In episode 27, Sumbul expresses her happiness to Noor Bano, “App ko pata hai Noor Bano, pehle na mai zindagi guzar rahi thi, ab mujhe lagta hai k jese mai zindagi jee rahi hoon. Mai itni khush hoon, halkan k yeh ghar bhi paraya hai lekin ab mujhe lagta hai k jese meri apni bhi koi zindagi hai.”
Noor Bano’s offer is not just a temporary solution but an open-ended one, allowing Sumbul the freedom to stay as long as she needs or even permanently. Noor Bano warmly reassures Sumbul that she is now part of her family and that she will always have a place with her. As Sumbul starts to build her independence, she feels liberated and empowered, expressing a newfound sense of freedom and self-worth. Noor Bano’s support helps Sumbul understand the true meaning of independence and living life on her own terms.
Narrative About Women Empowerment & Mutual Support
Noor Jahan offers a ground-breaking take on the saas-bahu genre by showcasing a narrative of female empowerment and mutual support. Unlike traditional dramas that focus on women enduring pain and suffering, “Noor Jahan” celebrates women who stand up for themselves and each other. The drama’s portrayal of sisterhood, support, and personal growth offers a refreshing and inspiring perspective, making it a standout example of how women can transcend adversity and advocate for their rights. Through its empowering storylines, “Nope Jahan” transforms the conventional drama into a celebration of strength and solidarity among women.
It is refreshing to see a Pakistani drama where women supporting women has taken centre stage in a narrative that could have been all about a cliched saas-bahu conspiracy instead. Have something to add? Drop us a comment below!
