Iqra Aziz & Yasir Hussain are in deep, deep trouble. They seem to have accidentally kicked the hornet’s nest on Sunday, at the Lux Style Awards 2019, and started a massive dumpster fire.
Iqra Aziz & Yasir Hussain Make It Official!

Rumors had surfaced about the two being in a committed relationship over the past couple of months. It didn’t help that they were frequently seen together, basking in each others company. However, they never outright declared their official relationship status. It was always a game of cat and mouse between them and their fans.
So you can imagine how shocked the fans were when Yasir Hussain made a very public display at the 2019 Lux Style Awards on Sunday. Though, Iqra’s surprise looked staged, you could tell that she was genuinely happy.
However, that happiness was short-lived, when over the course of 24 hours the internet turned its back on the two for their blatant “hugging and kissing”.
Fear The Wrath Of The Desi Aunties
As a nation that prides itself on its traditional norms and values, Pakistanis were furious – and one category of Pakistanis were the most furious of them all. Who might they be you ask? The “Desi Aunties”, of course.
No hot gossip is complete without the absolute and unwavering opinions of Desi Aunties everywhere. They’re the ones to be most offended with things that don’t concern them.
So, when Yasir resorted to PDA (Public Display of Affection) after Iqra Aziz accepted his proposal, the aunties were furious!
They took to Facebook and Twitter to express their views. From tagging PEMRA (calling them out for not taking action against this “beghairti“), to criticizing the age gap between the two; they left no territory uncharted. Here are a few of the point of views expressed online:
‘We are heading towards besharmi ki hud.’
‘So I’m the most liberal and understanding person but it made me extremely uncomfortable. I don’t think there was any need for it and it was a bit too much for the stomach. There is a certain decorum that must be followed as well as a tehzeeb to how we are brought up. Makes me think how much of it was a publicity stunt…’
‘All publicity stunt on the cost of our values and modesty!’
‘After Yasir’s proposal at #LSA2019 it’s a warning that you can’t watch Pakistani award shows with your family…’
‘…issue is the public PDA not the relationship. Ahad and Sajal’s shoot was intimate, but it was a shoot…. what Yasir did was personal forced down in professional.’
Sajal & Ahad vs. Iqra & Yasir

Naturally, the internet has been comparing the two couples, extensively and brutally, for the past 24 hours.
Both of the couples announced their engagement on the 7th – exactly a month apart but, completely different in terms of tone. Thus, the reception from fans, spanned varying degrees of disapproval and excitement.
Sajal Ali & Ahad Raza Mir went the traditional route. They kept their relationship under-wraps (for the most part), and involved their families in fine-tuning the details. Moreover, they announced their engagement to the fans after the intimate ceremony with their friends and family had been done and over with.
On the other hand, Iqra Aziz & Yasir Hussain adapted a more spontaneous approach. Though, some people are questioning the spontaneity of the proposal, we’ll take it for its face value. It was a more “hip” proposal, very “in with the times”. According to popular public opinion, it was more of a “show & tell” for the masses rather than an actual declaration of their love and loyalty to each other,
This Too Shall Pass

Taking into account how much public opinion can effect a budding relationship, we need to be sensitive to Iqra & Yasir’s feelings at this crucial time in their lives. Regardless of the whole, “is it morally, culturally & religiously appropriate” debate, we need to stop with the unnecessary hate and critique of the two.
Yes, what they did isn’t a representation of Pakistan’s norms and values, but people make mistakes all the time.
Maybe they’ll learn and grow from this in the future. However, the cussing from absolutely random strangers online isn’t helping anyone. Yes, some of the rational critique does make sense, but most of the comments (tbh) are absolute and utter garbage.
So let’s try and keep things civil and leave the two lovebirds in peace.
