The Week In Dramas is back and this time, I have to say, the week is happening beyond your wildest dreams. Whether that’s a good or bad omen, only time will tell, but safe to say, you could call this season Wahaj in Dramas, not kidding because he seems to be invading our living rooms thrice a week! Consider that in minutes and you get 50 into times 3 and that’s 150 minutes of Wahaj divided between Tere bin and Mujhe Pyaar Hua Tha  – the Murtasim and Saad cocktail is quite a heady combo, don’t you think?

Week In Dramas – Kuch Ankahi, Tere Bin, Mujhe Pyar Hua Tha & More!

So how do you recover from the intense hit is of course, with a dose of light headed and magical Kuch Ankahi, and that’s where we’ll begin!

Kuch Ankahi Promised Nostalgia

Kuch Ankahi – First Episode, First Review
Kuch Ankahi

It promised a different kind of vibe, a throwback to old school yet a refreshing take on the new. Kuch Ankahi promised social messaging wrapped in humour, love and ankahi baatein, it also promised an uplifting OST that I’m listening to right now and boy it’s growing on me.

Kuch Ankahi first episode delivered on its promises btw!

So a shout out to Mohammad Ahmed sahab, Nadeem Baig and Roshaneh Zafar of Kashf Foundation for giving us 50 minutes of moments that held a magical flavor; dialogues that made us smile, messages that had their finger on the pulse of society from greying hair to a young woman’s biological clock ticking and if that’s not all, sounding off on the rishta scene, a working girl in a role that hits different, comic, humour, poignant moments wrapped into family and then the winning combo of Salman & Aliya attempting to outdo each other was a laugh treat we all need with our cuppa chai. Have I stopped obsessing over the episode?

The thing about Kuch Ankahi is, that the first episode comes back to you, revisits in bite sized moments to nudge a smile out of you as you go through your day. Throwback to Aliya contemplating her day as she drives down the streets of Karachi, to a vision of Habib Bank Plaza in the backdrop to Salman salivating over pizza to have his victory turned on its head in a matter of seconds, to the vision of Saif – a sitting duck in the drawing room as his mom continues to polish off what’s left of the Rishta chai tray. Kuch Ankahi you are a super mix of evening tea, but not just any tea. There’s illaichi for the flavour, cinnamon for the masala, sugar for the sweet and then a hint of warmth in the aroma that blew us away in episode 1. And I promise I’ll stop here because Pinjra awaits!

And no, I have nothing negative to say about Kuch Ankahi because the drama has so much positivity that I’m going to let the rest go, positive old me (for those who get the drift, seat belts and cctvs are not on my list today).

Pinjra you just raised the scare level on this story to a burning 9 out of 10 on the Richter drama scale!

Pinjra
Pinjra

I mean, how will Abaan cope with life in jail! The moment he approached the guard after his lunch was unceremoniously sliced from him was enough to raise the hair on the back of my neck.

Then there’s Javed, ignorant in his ego battles and Khadija, walking out on a husband she would never have dreamt of. Saleem has my heart for his brief yet heartfelt role and Arsalan needs to up his game. Pinjra is certainly giving us the chills – on single women, married women, parenting, school life and teens. There are lessons to be learnt in every episode, in the silence of Abaan and the defiance of Fardaan, the helplessness of Azaan and the rising of Khadeeja. Also, in the strength of Wajiha who wins every week! A note on the court scene and subsequent lack of investigation on the age forgery, something amiss there in execution. I wish it had been dealt with more completely, but yeah, we’ll let it go!

So, Should we do Tere Bin or Mujhe Pyar Hua Tha?

Tere Bin
Tere Bin Starring Yumna Zaidi and Wahaj Ali

Tere Bin it is since we’ll save MPHT for the end. Murtasim is this young man who has been conditioned to look after a woman, rule her, tell her what to do and then move on – Meerab is a complex puzzle who was certainly not in his formula and fun to see how that one pans out. The chai ka cup had its moments on twitter and to quote Wahaj, Murtasim is not toxic, he just has ego problems, and some of them arise from love. Oh well, that makes two of them the ego problems. Coz Meerub is about to show him what ego is all about! Both these actors, Yumna and Wahaj are belting out quite the performance but I’m hoping the journey continues with least toxicity from Haya which is going to be an unfulfilled dream I’m afraid. Hoping the sensational bits don’t take over the intense and fun bit in the drama, if you know what I mean. But Tere Bin, despite it’s OTT teasers has managed to make a place in audiences hearts. Let’s hope it keeps to the trend because I’d like to keep this pair on my TV screens for now.

Aaand, speaking of the pair! Is it Saad and Maheer for you?

Mujhe Pyar Hua Tha - Episode Review
Mujhe Pyar Hua Tha

Interesting that twitter is grieving over Saad’s loss along with him. A kind of sadistic self inflicted pleasure as we weep with our hero, not wanting to leave him alone. That tear drop on the diary was magic in direction. The director seems to know that Saad’s tears will get the tweets and he plays it right. But on another note, can’t fathom who’s going to get more hate, Maheer for not being able to see Saad or Areeb for his obsessive kinda love-crush feels on Maheer.

Though she can be applauded for standing up to Areeb and not going the eloping way, she seems to play it unfair with Saad by asking him to take the fallout for refusing the Rishta. That, my dear friends will be the unkindest cut of all as our minds jump to episode next. It’s funny how the makers make us want to know when and how Saad will recover from the sad vibes and when Maheer will take a turn for Saad against Maheer. It’s also sad that some are predicting a funeral for Saad towards the end, and if that is on the cards, I’d suggest you stop watching – the heart can only take so much grief in one season and the Pakistani economy is enough for the average drama lover, the rest needs to be all fairy dust and magic please, just like Kuch Ankahi – or wrap it sugar coated illaichi chai with an ost to match just like Kuch Ankahi, and then, maybe, we can watch a but of sadness, but not too much please!

And that’s all folks! I’m done with the dramas because these 4 made my list! Tell me about yours! Will Samiya make it to Asfar in episode next and what of Salman’s mom seeking a Rishta for her son? Lot’s to find out in Kuch Ankahi!
