The 2nd episode of Sar e Rah highlights the issue of infertility in men, the toll it takes on a relationship, and how it is always the women who shoulder the blame and burden instead of the men.

“Humaari society mein aik shaadi shuda aurat larh sakti hain, … mana sakti hai, lekin faisla akele nahi kar sakti”
Rania’s dialogues hit home with a loud thud for many women who identified with them in the many, different yet connected lives they lead – connected with this single truth.
Grey characters & Infertility
It was refreshing to see that Aamir (the husband) was a grey character, a realistic representation of many men. He is not all bad, supports his wife, and loves her but does not have the courage to stand up for her before his family or to admit that the couple can’t have a baby because of him.
Appreciate the drama showing that he does seek treatment, even though it wasn’t successful. This is the beginning of starting a conversation and encouraging men to consider the possibility of infertility treatment and not avoid it. The episode addresses the problem and then possible solutions in terms of treatment and adoption.
Women Doctors & Pressure from in-laws
The drama also addresses the challenges of an educated woman, especially one who holds a medical degree but cannot practice her profession due to pressure from her in-laws. Doctors have to uphold the oath they take when they receive their practicing degrees and that pledge should not be disregarded by society or relegated to our regressive mindsets. We are doing a huge disservice to Medicine and to all those who need our skills and training as well as to all those women who study hard to follow this career path, only to have to forcibly give it up in later life.
Questions
Last but not the least, the story wraps up by showing a woman finally taking a decision that she really wants to, she stands up for what she believes in, and against a decision that is merely imposed upon her. The narrative leaves you with a very critical question: should a wife or a woman keep paying for the cowardice of a man, in terms of her dreams, her desires, and her happiness?
Sar-e-Rah will share the stories of women who are the victim of child marriages, girls who are being suffocated solely because of their gender, daughters who are unable to help their fathers as their honor will be at “stake” and a transgender who is being humiliated for his identity. It is written by Adeel Razzaq and directed by Ahmed Bhatti.
