A new age of dramas, a new normal for Pakistani audiences with Green Entertainment leading the charge, ready to conquer the Pakistani drama scene?

Are you someone who has lost interest in Pakistani dramas over the years? The stories that were once so captivating and thought provoking, free from toxic storylines about saas-bahu shenanigans, scheming sisters, morally compromising extra marital affairs and the same aesthetics are now a thing of the past.
Green Entertainment seems to be all set to give us a new approach, a refreshing change, intriguing storylines; rejecting all that is mundane, toxic and ‘been there done that’. It seems from the multiple drama trailers aired online that Green Entertainment has understood the assignment. If you have come across the promos for channel Green (we doubt you haven’t), you would know how it still retains the emblem of our culture but is highly in tune with the youth, society’s pressure points, stories and challenges/taboos in narratives that hit different. Their content isn’t just aimed at merely garnering star power, the team is also ticking every point in terms of storylines, content quality/awareness, production quality and changing the “normal” we are used to.
From 22 Qadam, 101 Talaqain, Kabli Pulao and Idiot – all the stories you wouldn’t believe exist in our society but in fact, are from the facets of our very own society. From focusing on women empowerment through representation in sports, 101 Talaqain revolving around the taboo topic of divorce in our country, Idiot where all the social misfits/rebels and wanderers who are considered dysfunctional, we break down how Green Entertainment is planning to change the Pakistani drama landscape.
1. Breaking The Monopoly
There’s a certain monopoly that exists in terms of the entertainment industry channels which perhaps we can attribute to high costs of entry and lack of support (production, talent and lack of sponsorships), so Green Entertainment has dared to make way and throw all their cards in. The teasers and promos are clear indicators of how they have not skimped on resources or taken shortcuts for content, talent or production quality. The trailers so far screened, have raised the bar for quality content and are giving competitors a run for their money. Because, let’s be real with globalization peaking, audiences now have multiple international content options with streaming channels so we have to rise up to the challenge. The old formula won’t suffice now.
2. Forging A Connection With Audiences
Green Entertainment has clearly risen to the task with their hearts and audiences have proved to be receptive of the storylines and content as shown through the comments, number and reviews on their trailers. By the looks of it they have won the first stage of the battle but let’s see, will they conquer the scripts yet? Their struggle of building a connection with audiences has worked, the anticipation has kept to an upward trend thanks to the meticulous culmination of the building blocks. With every drama trailer, every announcement, the audience-channel connection deepens making the viewers excited for the day the dramas begin to go on air.
3. In Sync With The Pulse Of The Nation
We have been witnesses to the lack of representation for women in sports, the lack of real life heroes being highlighted, avoidance of significant societal taboos, left out genres and audiences. While Pakistanis avidly consume international content to fulfil that void….Green has identified the gap and taken on the monumental challenge to essay women representation in sports, our real life heroes, relationships and divorce, among other burning issues. There is also content curated for younger audiences considering more than 64% of the country’s population is below the age of 30, take a look at College Gate and you’ll know what we mean. With 58% Pakistanis believing divorce rates in Pakistan have increased, this makes 101 Talaqain ideal for mature and newly married audiences. Green has aimed to cover all their bases by targeting a mixed target age group and their relationships.
Each storyline employs a different genre of storytelling – from the pull of dark humor or intrigue, to adding thrill in the narrative, more viewers might tune in when sober conversations are highlighted in a refreshingly new manner. College Gate is one of the missing pieces in the puzzle being a specially curated teen drama (a group of college friends facing teen including communication issues with parents), using digital influencers and YouTubers whom the youth are aware of and love. Though we are yet to see and hope they handle the narrative with the sensitivity it deserves. Will the youth problems depicted in College Gate be realistic and relatable enough for Pakistani youth and their particular challenges?
Kabli Pulao highlights mature love stories with dark customs and certain regions we might not be aware of, hence the awareness factor counts here. Idiot highlights how grownups label children who question moral wrongs as non conformists but are they non conformists or the ones raising them, missing out on key child rearing practices, are truths bitter and a lie sweet? How asking the right questions labels you an idiot in society?
4. Not Just Dramas
Green’s promos tie in with the multiple narratives it plans to screen online – it’s not just about a drama, but about changing the way we view those around us. It poses serious questions for ourselves as members of society. The team hasn’t just shared promotional content but done it with a certain degree of innovation – a new in Pakistan. Depicting youth narratives to portray the deeply ingrained, unconscious and conscious moral, ethical and societal conditionings in our daily lives, aptly showing how young people question ideologies: how money is the only definition of success (no matter how you earn it) but the kind of meat you eat must be halal at all costs. Are we willing to compromise on our values, integrity and health for financial gain?
