The fight against discrimination is far from over as racial prejudice continues to persist. Individuals from diverse backgrounds often find themselves navigating the challenges of racism. Brown people, in particular, face unique experiences and obstacles as they strive to navigate a predominantly white world. These experiences extend beyond everyday life and permeate various sectors, including the entertainment industry. Celebrities, who are often in the public eye, can serve as examples that highlight how racism remains prevalent in all walks of life, shedding light on the struggles faced by brown individuals in their pursuit of success and equality.

It’s frustrating to see how brown people have to constantly face racism in a white-dominated world, and celebrities serve as vivid reminders of this reality. These high-profile figures, who we often admire for their talent and accomplishments, also encounter discrimination and bias.

The presence of racism across all walks of life emphasizes the need for continuous efforts to combat discrimination and promote inclusivity. It is crucial to address and challenge the underlying biases that perpetuate these disparities. By acknowledging the struggles faced by brown individuals, we can strive for a more equitable society where everyone, regardless of their race or ethnicity, can thrive and be treated with dignity and respect. Here are 3 individuals inspiring a movement against racism!

1. Arooj Aftab

Arooj Aftab, the first and only Grammy award winner from Pakistan, recently criticized an American magazine for its hiring practices, racial prejudice, and Islamophobia. The controversy arose after contributing editor and music critic John McDonough, in his review of Aftab’s latest album “Love in Exile,” made derogatory remarks about Urdu chants and questioned the universality of music.

“In the celebratory spirit of diversity, maybe I’m obliged to embrace the “timeless beauty” of these Urdu chants. But in the rigor of critical candour I must admit that music is not a universal language and warn of their tedious monotony”

McDonough Wrote in his review of Love in Exile.

Expressing her dissatisfaction with the review, Aftab took to social media, calling out the magazine for its “outrageous and unapologetic racist remarks” toward three brown musicians who were creating contemporary music. She accused the magazine of employing “fossilized white men” who have the privilege and platform to publish their racist views.

Aftab further argued that McDonough’s comments reduced her album, as well as South Asians in general, to stereotypes such as meditation, yoga, chanting, and Bollywood. She criticized McDonough for dismissing the presence of brown musicians in the contemporary music scene and belittling their artistic contributions.

2. Saima Mohsin

Saima Mohsin, a former CNN reporter, has initiated a lawsuit against the news channel, alleging unjust termination and racial discrimination subsequent to a severe injury she sustained while on assignment in Israel.

Back in 2014, while reporting on the Israel-Palestine conflict in Jerusalem, Mohsin suffered disabling injuries when her cameraman accidentally ran over her foot with a vehicle, causing substantial damage to her tissues. As a British-Pakistani journalist, she has since faced challenges in sitting, standing, walking, and resuming full-time work.

According to Mohsin, following the incident, she made multiple requests to CNN for alternative duties and rehabilitation support, all of which were turned down. Moreover, she claims that when she proposed transitioning to a presenting role to reduce her travel obligations, the network responded by stating that she did not possess the desired appearance. Three years later, CNN terminated her contract.

Mohsin’s legal complaint encompasses allegations of racial and disability discrimination, along with a grievance regarding the gender pay gap at CNN. She asserts that she was consistently denied prominent on-air opportunities, with network managers consistently favoring white American correspondents over her, even when she was ready to report live from the field.

“I’m also taking the opportunity to highlight the racism and gender pay gap issues that I experienced. I was repeatedly let down and denied the ability to achieve my potential while I was at CNN. I am bringing my claim to take a stand and call for change to ensure women journalists, and women journalists of colour, are better protected”.

CNN has chosen to withhold comment on the specific allegations and is contesting the lawsuit on jurisdictional grounds, contending that the terms of Mohsin’s contract prohibit her from bringing the case in London.

3. Azeem Rafiq

The Azeem Rafiq racism scandal has brought attention to issues of racism and discrimination in English cricket. Azeem Rafiq, a former professional cricketer who played for Yorkshire County Cricket Club (CCC), has spoken out about the racism and bullying he experienced during his time with the club.

Rafiq, who is of Pakistani descent, joined Yorkshire CCC in 2008 as a young player and quickly rose through the ranks. However, he alleges that he faced systemic racism and religious discrimination within the club. He claims to have been subjected to derogatory slurs, racial stereotypes, and exclusionary behavior.

In a candid interview with ESPN Cricinfo, Azeem Rafiq revealed the profound impact his experiences at Yorkshire had on his mental health. He shared that he knew how close he had been to contemplating suicide during his time at the club, expressing that despite living his family’s dream as a professional cricketer, he felt an inner sense of dying. Going to work became a dreaded experience, causing him pain every day.

“Look at the facts and figures. Look at a squad photograph. Look at the coaches. How many non-white faces do you see? Despite the ethnic diversity of the cities in Yorkshire, despite the love for the game from Asian communities, how many people from those backgrounds are making it into the first team? It’s obvious to anyone who cares that there’s a problem. Do I think there is institutional racism? It’s at its peak in my opinion. It’s worse than it’s ever been.”

Rafiq acknowledged that during his attempts to fit in, he engaged in actions that he now regrets as a Muslim. However, he emphasized that as soon as he stopped trying to conform, he became an outsider within the club. The absence of coaches who shared a similar background and understood his struggles further intensified his feelings of isolation.

According to Rafiq, Yorkshire exhibited an unwillingness to listen, change, and address the issues he raised. He believed that the club wanted to sweep the matter under the carpet, especially since the individuals involved in the incidents he referred to were still associated with the organization.

The Cricket Discipline Commission of the ECB has released the sanctions against the six former Yorkshire players who were found guilty of using racist language towards Azeem Rafiq, resulting in bringing the game into disrepute. The sanctions include fines ranging from £2,500 to £6,000 for each player, along with a “strong recommendation” that they undergo anti-racism training courses at their own expense.

These individuals are not only enduring the challenges of systemic racism but also inspiring a powerful movement against it. Their experiences and stories serve as catalysts for change, sparking conversations and mobilizing communities to address the deep-rooted biases that exist within our systems and institutions.

To sum it up, a recent report by The Independent Commission In the UK as stated by The Guardian in 2023 has the following findings:

English cricket suffers from “widespread and deep-rooted” racism, sexism, elitism and class-based discrimination at all levels of the game and urgently needs reform, a landmark report has found.

The 317-page report from the Independent Commission for Equity in Cricket (Icec), which drew on evidence from more than 4,000 players, coaches, administrators and fans, also urges the sport to also face up to the fact “that it’s not banter or just a few bad apples” causing the problems.
