Watching last night’s episode was a very intense and emotional experience. The family’s reaction, where they termed this worse than someone’s death was a shocker – how an action that was legal and valid was turned into a crime. They were not just concerned about their izzat, but they also felt they could have salvaged the situation if they were the ones informing others about the situation rather than being informed by the neighbors.
Their reactions reflected how we react to such relationships, making them a case of losing our honor, not really questioning as to the reason why they transpired in the first place and what the people involved might be going through. Kabli Pulao in fact, summarized different reactions. From a sister and bhabi who viewed it practically and were willing to accept it, to the brothers who refused to face the world. The return of Aisha made all the difference… maybe her “no reaction” to the situation calmed them down.
What is really endearing is Barbeena’s reaction…She smiles and tells Haji Mushtaq that he has to learn to get used to his family’s reactions. Despite all the drama and rage unfolding outside her room, she was still willing to go and get food just so that Haji Mushtaq will not fall sick.
Shameem Won Our Heart
It was a sad scene, when Shameem talks about the connection she and Haji Mushtaq always had. How she took care of him, didn’t get married waiting for him… thinking if not her, who else will take care of Haji Mushtaq. She also freed him of all the blame by recalling that he always begged her to marry someone, in fact also sought proposals for her. We are still waiting to find out why he didn’t marry her, as it does seem like they shared a connection.
This is the beauty of Kabli Pulao, the story makes us feel for every character. Shameem with her apology at the graveyard, won our heart and revealed a human side to her. Despite how she felt, she realised the damage was done. Even ASI Ilyas managed to soften some of our harsh feelings towards him by pointing out how women keep taking care of people who abuse them.

Kabli Pulao highlighted a very important point about how women keep loving the very people who abuse them. How we have romanticized silence in the absence of a definite yes – maybe, just maybe, his silence will turn into a yes?
Is Love In The Air?
Haji Mushtaq wins us over once again by confessing that he didn’t know how to solve the problem once he had embarrassed his family by going through with the nikah. We also wonder, why did he tell Barbeena that he didn’t stop her because of the nikah? Why did he stop her then? Is it only to protect her, or is he in denial and, very much in love?
