As we wrap up 2023, let’s take a stroll down memory lane and revisit some of the standout moments that defined the year. From the ground-shaking earthquakes in Turkey to Pakistan’s cinematic triumphs making global waves, it’s been a year filled with highs and lows.
As we delve into this 2023 year in review, we witness the ebb and flow of humanity’s collective experiences, acknowledging the resilience, creativity, and shared moments that defined this transformative year.
1. Turkey – Syria Earthquakes
On February 6, earthquakes rattled southern and central Turkey and northern and western Syria. The initial shock, measuring 7.8 in moment magnitude, was followed by a subsequent 7.7 magnitude quake located 95 km north-northeast from the epicenter of the first.
The magnitude 7.8 earthquake stands as the most potent seismic event in Turkey since the 1939 Erzincan earthquake of comparable magnitude, and it ranks among the strongest earthquakes ever recorded in the Levant region.
Over the ensuing three months, the affected regions experienced more than 30,000 aftershocks, prolonging the challenges faced by survivors. The scale of the disaster was immense, with an estimated 14 million people, constituting 16 percent of Turkey’s population, feeling its effects. According to assessments by United Nations development experts, approximately 1.5 million individuals were left homeless in the wake of the earthquakes.

2. Ocean Gate Expedition
Ocean Gate, the tour firm that once operated submarine missions for Titanic wreck exploration, experienced a tragic incident during a past mission. The submersible lost contact with the historic site and its mother ship, the Canadian research icebreaker “Polar Prince,” just 1.5 hours into the dive.
The US Coast Guard believed a catastrophic implosion led to the deaths of the five men on board, including OceanGate’s late CEO Stockton Rush, the late British-Pakistani businessman Shahzada Dawood and his late son Suleman, the late British businessman Hamish Harding, and the late renowned explorer Paul-Henry Nargeolet. Parts of the submersible were found about 1,600ft from the Titanic wreck’s bow, confirming the tragic outcome.

3. Barbenheimer
The standout pop culture moment of 2023 unquestionably revolved around an unexpected pairing: the simultaneous release of the Barbie movie and Oppenheimer. It was a spectacle that ignited a whirlwind of excitement, featuring back-to-back cinema viewings, specially crafted outfits, and, of course, an avalanche of memes.
Fans and enthusiasts embraced the unique cultural phenomenon, turning cinema outings into extravagant events where Barbie’s glamorous world collided with the intellectual depth of Oppenheimer. The juxtaposition of the two vastly different films created a delightful and unexpected synergy.
Surpassing all expectations, both movies rocked the box office, leaving audiences awestruck and entertained!

4. Artificial Intelligence
In the year 2023, artificial intelligence stepped into the spotlight, marking a significant milestone in its journey from niche technology to mainstream adoption. While its arrival had long been anticipated, the technology still has a considerable distance to cover before it aligns with the futuristic visions of human-like machines depicted in science fiction.
At the forefront of the AI phenomenon was ChatGPT, a chatbot that provided the world with a glimpse of the recent strides made in computer science. Despite not everyone fully grasping its inner workings or knowing precisely how to leverage it, the technology became a focal point of the year’s AI excitement.
The year became a period of exploration for people, as they sought to understand the implications of AI, how to utilize it, and its broader impact—unveiling the good, the bad, and the ugly. This newfound wave of generative AI tools, capable of producing not just text but also novel images, music, and synthetic voices, raised concerns. It posed a potential threat to the livelihoods of those whose professions involve writing, drawing, playing music, or coding.

5. Pakistani Entertainment Highs
This was the year Pakistan showcased its prowess in the global entertainment arena, with accolades pouring in for the Pakistani feature film “In Flames,” which clinched the esteemed Best Feature Film award at the Red Sea International Film Festival. Director Khan’s debut received widespread recognition after its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in May 2023. Adding to the triumph, “Zindagi Tamasha” overcame challenges to secure a worldwide release on YouTube on August 4, 2023.
In a notable stride, Pakistan also found a place on the Oscars 2023 shortlist with “Joyland.” This achievement is particularly noteworthy as it breaks a streak of ten unsuccessful submissions from Pakistan over the past 60 years. On the streaming front, Netflix ventured into Pakistan’s vibrant entertainment landscape with the homegrown original series “Jo Bachay Hain Sang Samait Lo,” garnering attention not only within Pakistan but also resonating with audiences across South Asia and beyond. It’s undeniably a year that marks Pakistan’s ascent to prominence on the global stage in the realm of entertainment.

6.Chandrayaan-3
In a historic feat, Chandrayaan-3, India’s lunar mission, made a groundbreaking touchdown on the Moon, establishing the nation’s presence as a formidable force in space exploration. This remarkable achievement not only showcased India’s technological prowess but also represented a pivotal milestone in its ongoing lunar exploration efforts.
Joining an exclusive club of nations that have achieved a soft landing on the lunar surface—following the United States, the former Soviet Union, and China.

7. Bollywood’s Shift To OTT
The Indian population has reached an all-time high, positioning India as perhaps the largest market for over-the-top (OTT) service providers such as Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and Disney+. The entertainment landscape underwent a significant transformation in recent times, spurred by the closure of theaters during the Covid-19 pandemic. OTT platforms capitalized on this opportunity, emerging as the primary sources of entertainment worldwide.
The year commenced with the blockbuster “Pathan,” grossing over 1000 crores INR. Subsequent releases like “The Kerala Story,” “Gadar 2,” “Jawan,” and Ranbir Kapoor’s “Animals” hinted at a potential resurgence of theater-goers. However, it’s crucial to note that films like “Jawan” and “Rocky Aur Rani” were quickly made available on OTT platforms, suggesting a shift in audience preferences.
Moreover, web series like “Made in Heaven Season 2,” “Farzi,” and “Guns and Gulaabs” gained considerable viewership, emphasizing the sustained popularity of OTT content. Additionally, Kareena Kapoor marked her OTT debut with “Jaane Jaan,” and the release of “Archies” introduced the debut of three-star kids—Suhana Khan, Agastya Nanda, and Khushi Kapoor.
While the Bollywood box office has seen a revival, the industry has unmistakably undergone a substantial shift towards OTT platforms in the post-pandemic era. The diverse array of content, spanning from blockbuster films to engaging web series, indicates a dynamic and evolving entertainment landscape that caters to the diverse preferences of the audience.

8. Ozempic
In 2023, the weight loss drug Ozempic took the world by storm, hailed as the ultimate solution for shedding extra pounds when other methods fell short. However, the debate over its online availability raised critical concerns, particularly considering its primary use in treating Type 2 diabetes and obesity. Semaglutide, the active component in Ozempic, was known for enhancing insulin secretion and improving glycemic control, making it a crucial medication for diabetes patients.
Administered through weekly injections, Ozempic not only regulated insulin release but also acted as an appetite suppressant, aiding in weight loss by reducing calorie intake. Studies demonstrated its efficacy in lowering HbA1c levels and promoting weight loss, suggesting potential benefits for heart health. However, it’s important to emphasize that Ozempic is a prescription-based drug.

9. Twitter To X!
In 2023, Elon Musk rebranded Twitter to “X,” redirecting the website from X.com to Twitter.com, updating the company’s headquarters logo to a flashing X, and transforming the app’s appearance to reflect the new identity, marked as “X” in both the Apple and Google app stores.

10. Hollywood Strikes
In a significant labor dispute on the West Coast, over 11,000 Hollywood writers initiated a walkout when wage negotiations with studios and streaming services fell apart. The strike, lasting 146 days, halted nightly talk shows and scripted project productions. Writers sought fixed staffing levels, improved residuals from streaming, and safeguards against job displacement by artificial intelligence.
Unionized actors joined the strike in mid-July, further impacting studio productions. In late September, after returning to work, the writers secured a favorable package meeting most of their demands. Additionally, the Screen Actors Guild and American Federation of Television and Radio Artists reached a new two-year deal after four months on picket lines, securing pay raises, AI regulations, a revised compensation model for streaming performers, and improved residual payments. The resolution marked a hard-fought victory for writers and performers in shaping industry practices.

11. Israel-Gaza War
since October 7, the ongoing conflict has taken a tragic toll, with the latest figures from the Health Ministry in Gaza reporting at least 19,453 people killed, including 7,729 children, in Israeli attacks. Additionally, the number of people wounded has risen to 52,286, with 8,663 children among them.
Notably, the Israel-Palestine conflict has witnessed the highest number of journalist fatalities in a single month, as documented by the Committee to Protect Journalists since their data collection began in 1992. This stark contrast is evident when compared to the global scenario in 2022, where a total of 68 journalists and media workers lost their lives due to various conflicts, incidents related to dangerous assignments, targeted killings, and crossfire.
