Dear Malala,

Your recent tweet extending sympathy for Jon Stewart’s departed dog, Dipper, felt like a slap in the face of the millions of Pakistani people still struggling for basic rights and dignity. While your gesture may have been well-intentioned, as a global icon for women’s rights and education, you possess the unparalleled ability to drive meaningful change on a scale few can fathom. Your voice reverberates across continents, resonating with millions who look to you for guidance and inspiration.

Yet, as you extend condolences for the passing of Jon Stewart’s dog, Dipper, the world wonders: where is your voice in the face of atrocities within our homeland, Pakistan, and beyond?

Pakistan reels from the weight of its own injustices as countless lives are marred by poverty, discrimination, and violence. As a global advocate for women’s rights and education, your silence on these pressing issues echoes with deafening intensity.

Here’s a reminder of the urgent challenges that demand your attention!

Mob Mentality & Religious Extremism

In a recent chilling incident that unfolded in Lahore, the city was rocked by a display of mob mentality and religious extremism that sent shockwaves through its core. At the center of this distressing episode was a young woman adorned in a dress embellished with Arabic calligraphy, who found herself confronted by an angry mob. Amidst the chaos, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Shehrbano Naqvi emerged as a beacon of hope, courageously stepping in to protect the woman from harm’s way.

ASP Naqvi’s account of the incident sheds light on the underlying dynamics—a mere misunderstanding and miscommunication that rapidly escalated into a storm of violence and intolerance. While the specifics of the confusion may vary, the broader issues of mob mentality and religious extremism remain deeply entrenched in Pakistan’s societal fabric.

In the face of adversity, ASP Naqvi epitomized courage, compassion, and professionalism, standing steadfast against the rising tide of extremism and violence.

Malala, incidents like these underscore the urgency of our issues, demanding your relentless attention and advocacy.

Mob mentality, often fueled by religious extremism, perpetuates irrational and destructive behavior that undermines the rule of law and individual freedoms. In Lahore, the incident involving the young woman highlights the critical need for greater tolerance, understanding, and respect for diversity.

Statistics paint a troubling picture, with the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan reporting at least 30 cases of mob violence in 2023, many of which were fueled by religious extremism. Adding your voice to calling out the obvious ignorance in cases such as the one above and others, will amplify the cause and perhaps, help save lives and create awareness.

2. Attack On Freedom Of Expression

The year witnessed a disturbing escalation in threats and attacks on the media, instilling a pervasive climate of fear among journalists and civil society groups. Many resorted to self-censorship as authorities relentlessly pressured or threatened media outlets against criticizing government institutions or the judiciary.

Pakistan’s archaic sedition law, inherited from colonial-era British legislation, remained a tool of repression. Although the Lahore High Court declared the law unconstitutional in March, the government’s appeal against the decision stalled progress. .

Non-governmental organizations (NGOs) reported alarming levels of intimidation, harassment, and surveillance. Regulation of international non-governmental organizations (INGOs) hindered the registration and operations of humanitarian and human rights groups, exacerbating the crackdown on dissent and civil liberties.

In a stark illustration of the breadth of repression, even women political workers faced arrest, with at least 63 women incarcerated during the period. This relentless assault on freedom of expression and association underscores the urgent need for concerted international action to safeguard democratic principles and protect the rights of all citizens.

3. Children’s Rights

In Pakistan, the education system continues to face significant challenges, with over 6 million primary school-age children and 13 million secondary school-age children out of school, a majority of whom are girls. Human Rights Watch highlighted various reasons for girls missing school, including the lack of accessible schools, financial barriers to education, early marriage, exploitative child labor, and pervasive gender discrimination.

Despite attempts to prohibit it, the employment of child domestic workers remains widespread. A distressing case that garnered national attention in July involved Rizwana, a 14-year-old girl who suffered months of brutal torture while working for a judge’s family, shining a spotlight on the pervasive issue of abuse and mistreatment faced by child domestic workers. Similarly, in February, an 11-year-old child domestic worker named Qabool was tragically beaten to death by his employer in Karachi.

Tragically, child sexual abuse remains alarmingly common in Pakistan. According to the children’s rights organization Sahil, there were over 12 reported cases daily of child sexual abuse across the country during the first six months of 2023, highlighting the urgent need for comprehensive measures to protect children from exploitation and abuse.

4. Prison System

In Pakistani society, a pervasive lack of awareness about mental health exacerbates the abuse faced by individuals with psychosocial disabilities, including mental health conditions. Prisoners seeking mental health support are often met with ridicule and denied access to services within a prison system that lacks adequate mental health professionals. Authorities within the prison system tend to approach reports of mental health conditions with suspicion, resulting in perfunctory or absent psychological assessments for new prisoners. The frequent use of solitary confinement in Pakistani prisons further compounds the risks faced by individuals with psychosocial disabilities.

Moreover, data from the Federal Ombudsman Secretariat for Protection Against Harassment indicates a troubling increase in rates of sexual harassment in the workplace, disproportionately affecting women. Despite the prevalence of workplace sexual harassment, the Pakistani government has yet to ratify the International Labour Organization Violence and Harassment Convention (C190), which mandates comprehensive protections to address violence and harassment, including gender-based violence, in work environments.

5. The Plight Of Women

Malala did you know, In Pakistan, the conviction rate for rape stands at a shockingly low less than 3 percent, highlighting a dire failure in the country’s justice system to provide adequate recourse for survivors of sexual violence. This abysmally low rate underscores systemic failures in addressing and prosecuting cases of rape, leaving many survivors without the justice and closure they deserve.

Furthermore, Pakistan’s ranking of 150 out of 153 countries on The Georgetown Institute’s Women, Peace, and Security Index places it among the five worst countries for women globally. This dismal ranking reflects the multitude of challenges and obstacles faced by women in Pakistan, ranging from limited access to education and healthcare to pervasive gender-based violence and discrimination.

Adding to the gravity of the situation is the alarming statistic that in Pakistan, a woman is raped every 2 hours. This staggering frequency of sexual violence underscores the urgent need for comprehensive reforms and concerted efforts to address the root causes of gender-based violence and improve the safety and well-being of women across the country.

In conclusion, Malala, the situation’s urgency cannot be overstated. As a prominent advocate for women’s rights and education, your voice holds significant sway in shaping narratives and driving change.

The world is indeed watching, not to shower praises, but to see tangible progress and meaningful reforms. It is time for all of us, including you Malala and other influential figures, to roll up our sleeves and work tirelessly toward dismantling the systemic barriers that oppress people.

Let us not rest until every person in Pakistan and around the globe is afforded the dignity, respect, and rights they rightfully deserve.
