In what is truly a historic step for our nation, perhaps too little? But alas, any effort to kickstart this initiative should be applauded. A groundbreaking institute, the first of its kind in Pakistan, has been established in Lahore to offer education and shelter for transgender children, all under one roof. This project is a collaboration between Punjab Police and a British organization.
A Revolutionary Initiative
Named “Tahaffuz Darsgah,” which translates to “safe lyceum,” the institute was inaugurated by the outgoing Punjab caretaker Chief Minister Mohsin Naqvi on Thursday. Situated near Jallo Park, “Tahaffuz Darsgah” is a revolutionary initiative providing O- and A-levels education along with accommodation. Remarkably, the institute was set up in just 18 days by the United Kingdom Curriculum and Accreditation Board, marking an unprecedented achievement.
A Step To Empower The Marginalized
During his visit to the facility on Friday, CM Naqvi remarked, “Tahaffuz Darsgah’s building might be small, but its mission is significant.” He emphasized that the challenges faced by the transgender community are substantial, yet society tends to overlook them. Indeed, as a society, we often neglect efforts to include and empower marginalized communities, failing to recognize and uphold their rights.
During his visit to the facility on Friday, CM Naqvi remarked, “Tahaffuz Darsgah’s building might be small, but its mission is significant. He stated that the issues facing the transgender community are significant, yet people are reluctant to address them. This rings true as our society still fails to actively work towards destigmatizing, integrating, and ensuring the rightful rights of transgender individuals.
During the visit, the chief minister examined the classrooms, hostel, rooms, and other amenities at the Tahaffuz Darsgah. Naqvi was informed during the briefing that transgender children would undergo technical training and education, and they would also have access to a safe environment.
