Fatima Jinnah, affectionately known as Madar-e-Millat, holds a revered place in the hearts of Pakistanis. She embodies a greater cause, a public figure who surpassed the demands of duty to dedicate her life to serving the mothers, daughters, and sisters of our nation.

However, pause for a moment. While titles bestow much love and respect on a public figure, they can also obscure the true individual and the spirit within—the force behind a significant following. Indeed, individuals from various backgrounds viewed Fatima Jinnah as their savior. Following her brother Mohammad Ali Jinnah’s death, Fatima was considered, by overwhelming public opinion, the beacon that would steer the nation to safety. It was no mere coincidence that her election symbol was a lantern.

Fatima Jinnah epitomized the perfect blend of feminine strength and traditional values—a pioneer of women’s empowerment before it became a recognized term. She was akin to that friend who champions feminism yet still honors her grandma’s principles.

Read on as we elaborate.

Fatima Jinnah is a timeless icon in Pakistan’s journey towards progress and distinction. She is not merely a historical figure; she embodies the aspirations we hold dear. While her political endeavors are well-known, her full narrative reveals a woman far ahead of her era, challenging norms and exemplifying the strength of Pakistani women.

Portraying Fatima Jinnah as merely another historical character confined to the pages of a history textbook, studied only to pass an exam, fails to capture the tenacity and dynamism that influenced the halls of power in an emerging nation like Pakistan in 1947 – a pivotal moment in history.

1. The Ultimate Boss Move That Shook the “Foundations” of The Quaid’s Resting Place

In 1957, the decision to appoint an international jury to select a design for the mausoleum marked a pivotal moment. This jury, comprising predominantly of European modernist architects, embarked on the task of selecting a winning design from a pool of submissions in a competition. Ultimately, the modernist design put forth by Raglan Squire & Partners, a British architectural firm, earned unanimous acclaim from the jury.

However, the events took a significant turn in 1958 when Fatima Jinnah emerged as a formidable critic of the chosen design. Expressing profound objections to both the architect’s nationality and the international jury’s composition, she sought to assert a more localized and culturally resonant approach to the project. Assuming a leadership role in the design selection process, Jinnah commissioned Yahya Merchant, an esteemed architect based in Bombay, to undertake the task of conceptualizing the mausoleum.

Fatima Jinnah’s bold move to shake up the mausoleum design process back in the day? Isn’t it like the ultimate boss move? And here’s the thing, her stand isn’t just some history lesson; it’s like a playbook for today’s Pakistani women, especially us young adults.

Think about it: she saw something she didn’t vibe with, this whole foreign-dominated decision-making thing, and she didn’t just sit back. No, she stepped up, said, “Hold up, we can do better,” and made it happen. That’s serious girl power right there!

For modern-day Pakistani girls, it’s a reminder that we don’t have to accept the status quo. We’ve got the power to challenge norms, to demand representation, and to make our voices heard. Fatima Jinnah wasn’t just fighting for a mausoleum; she was fighting for our right to shape our future, and that’s a legacy worth carrying forward, don’t you think?

2. Pakistan Girls Guide Association – Honing Youth Skills to Become The Leaders Of Tomorrow

Fatima Jinnah’s tireless commitment to women’s empowerment and equal opportunities serves as a shining example for modern-day Pakistani women, especially young adults. She didn’t just talk the talk; she walked the walk, advocating for the active participation of women in politics and various fields of life.

Take her establishment of the Pakistan Girls Guide Association, for instance. It wasn’t just about teaching girls how to tie knots and pitch tents; it was about instilling confidence, skills, and character development in young girls, paving the way for their active engagement in society.

And let’s not forget her role in founding the Women’s Relief Committee, which later evolved into the All Pakistan Women’s Association. Alongside Begum Rana Liaquat Ali Khan, she spearheaded initiatives to uplift women across Pakistan’s newly created state.

But perhaps one of her most impactful legacies was the establishment of industrial welfare homes, like the Muslim Women Industrial Home. These weren’t just places to learn vocational skills; they were hubs of empowerment, equipping women with the tools they needed to become self-reliant and economically independent.

3. Women’s Right To Hold Property & Inheritance

Fatima Jinnah’s fearless stance against unjust British laws, which perpetuated gender inequality and hindered women’s economic independence, resonates powerfully with modern-day Pakistani women. In the face of regressive legislation that disabled women from owning property or inheriting land without male consent, she didn’t just sit back and accept the status quo. Instead, she boldly spoke out, highlighting the injustice and advocating for change.

Her opposition to the Rowlatt Act in 1919, which granted the government sweeping powers of arrest and detention without due process, further exemplifies her unwavering commitment to justice and individual rights. Despite the risks involved, she stood firm in her principles, refusing to be silenced in the face of tyranny.

So, what can we learn from Fatima Jinnah’s practical approach?

Well, for starters, we can’t just complain about unfair stuff and hope it goes away, or it’s someone else’s job to get it “done’. We’ve got to roll up our sleeves, take ownership, and get involved in the public process. Whether it’s speaking up about outdated laws, pushing for change in our communities, or standing up against injustice, we’ve gotta be like Fatima Jinnah—practical, determined, and ready to make a difference, one step at a time.

4. The First Woman To Run For Presidential Elections

Fatima Jinnah was the only woman to date who ran for elections in 1965 against formidable male counterparts. She also commanded vast popularity among the masses as well as in the urban centers of Karachi and Dhaka.

Her triumph lay in the fact that even though many Muslim clerics had denounced her competency as a woman to run the nation, she won the support of the then-religious political party Jamaat e Islami led by Maulana Maududi for her conservative, yet religious views.

Unfortunately, due to a flawed election process and the erratic political climate of the time, she failed to secure enough seats in rural areas and did not win the final vote. Many felt she would have been a great ruler with views that aligned with the popular philosophy of Pakistan as an emerging force to be reckoned with in the world.

5. On Motherhood: Too Outdated For The Modern? Fatima Jinnah Set The Record Straight!

The sublime union between the public & private lives of women is what Gen Z strives for today. We want the peace and comfort of home, but we also want to amplify our voices in public life. And you know what, Fatima Jinnah agrees.

Where she was the biggest proponent of women participating actively in public life, she articulated a profound perspective on the significance of motherhood, asserting that committed mothers are an invaluable national asset. She lamented the prevalent disregard for this fundamental truth among women, noting a dichotomy between modern and uneducated women’s perceptions. Modern women, she observed, often dismiss the importance of motherhood as outdated and conservative, while uneducated women may lack awareness of its significance in contemporary society.

In the context of Muslim social norms, Fatima Jinnah highlighted the deeply ingrained belief in the inherent dignity and potential of women as creations of Allah. Rejecting the notion of inherent weakness in women (often cited as a reason by male-dominated philosophies for side-lining them in core decision-making roles), she contended that societal and circumstantial factors may create apparent weaknesses but affirmed the potential for women to surpass men in certain aspects with determination and willpower.

So, what does this mean for modern Pakistani women?

Well, it’s a reminder to recognize and embrace the power of motherhood, not as a limitation, but as a source of strength and influence. It prompts us to support and empower mothers in our society, whether it’s through education, advocacy, or simply acknowledging their importance in shaping the future.

Because when we value and uplift mothers, we’re not just honoring tradition; we’re building a stronger, more resilient society for everyone. And that’s a conversation worth having.

The forthcoming web series, “Fatima Jinnah,” set to debut in 2024, aims to cast a somber & “not yet seen before” light on the profound journey of a woman who transformed from being a mere sister into an indomitable revolutionary, ultimately rising to the stature of a distinguished stateswoman.
