For how long will this so-called ‘honor’ compel men to kill their wives, sisters, and other females around them? The persistent cycle of violence continues to claim innocent lives, and it must be addressed urgently.

In a harrowing incident, a 19-year-old newlywed woman named Saba Iqbal was allegedly burnt alive by her husband, Ali Raza, in Punjab. This horrific event took place in Bahawalnagar, on July 28. Police reported that Raza suspected his wife of having an affair, leading to the brutal act.
Saba and Raza had contracted a court marriage about eight months ago. An FIR registered with the Haroonabad City Police Station stated that Raza began torturing Saba, accusing her of immoral activities.
Here’s What Happened On 28th July
On July 28, Raza informed Saba’s family that she had left home in anger after an argument and was missing. Tragically, Saba’s burnt body was discovered in a field the next day, near a filling station at Haroonabad. According to the FIR, Ali Raza confessed to his in-laws that he had burnt Saba alive.
A case has been registered against Raza and unidentified suspects. Police sources revealed that the suspect is being further interrogated. According to his initial statements, Raza claimed to have killed his wife for honour. Police also indicated that his sister and brother-in-law might have been involved in the murder.
Honor Killings In Pakistan
Honor killings remain a grave issue in Pakistan, even though there are legal provisions against them. According to Section 302 of the Pakistan Penal Code, honor killings are punishable by death or life imprisonment. However, enforcement remains weak, and as a result, perpetrators often escape justice due to societal norms and pressures that protect them.
The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan reports that hundreds of women fall victim to honor killings every year. In 2023, approximately 1,000 cases of honor killings were reported. This alarming statistic reflects the deep-seated cultural and societal challenges that persist, despite ongoing efforts to curb this heinous practice.
This is a developing story, and more details will emerge as the investigation progresses.
