Donald Trump named Person of the Year by Time Magazine: A look at other controversial figures who’ve sparked debate throughout history.

Every year, Time Magazine’s Person of the Year stirs up a whirlwind of conversations, arguments, and even the occasional raised eyebrow. This annual tradition, which crowns a figure who has left an indelible mark on global events—be it for better or worse—inevitably finds itself at the center of debate. And this year? Oh, it’s no exception. Among the list of nominees sat Benjamin Netanyahu, a figure mired in controversy as he spearheads what many have called a genocidal onslaught against Palestinians in Gaza. Unsurprisingly, his inclusion has sparked outrage, with critics questioning the implications of featuring a leader associated with human rights abuses on such a platform.

But before you assume the title is always meant as a glowing endorsement, here’s a reality check. Henry Luce, Time’s founder, had something very specific in mind when he dreamed up this concept back in the 1920s. “It was never meant to be an honor,” Luce explained, emphasizing that the Person of the Year is simply “the newsmaker who most influenced world events for better or worse.” It’s a distinction—like an exclamation point on the headlines of the year, regardless of whether that figure’s impact was uplifting or destructive.

So while the title isn’t exactly a gold star, its selections often ignite heated debates about the criteria and the responsibility of highlighting figures whose influence may have done more harm than good. This year’s controversy is just the latest chapter in a tradition that continues to provoke discussions about morality, media, and the nature of influence.

Donald Trump has been named Time Magazine’s Person of the Year for the second time, recognizing his remarkable political resurgence and influence on the global stage. According to Time’s Editor-in-Chief, Sam Jacobs, Donald Trump earned the honor for “marshaling a historic comeback, driving a rare political realignment, reshaping the presidency, and altering America’s role in the world.”

This marks Donald Trump’s second win, following his selection in 2016. He was chosen over a diverse or rather controversial shortlist that included Vice President Kamala Harris, Princess Catherine of Wales, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, billionaire Elon Musk, and podcast icon Joe Rogan.

The title, awarded to those who have significantly influenced global events, has long been a reflection of contemporary power and relevance. Since Franklin D. Roosevelt, almost every U.S. president has received the recognition at least once, with Gerald Ford being the sole exception. For Trump, it solidifies his place among the figures who have shaped history.

Donald Trump remains one of the most controversial figures in modern politics, largely due to his unorthodox approach to governance and provocative rhetoric. His tenure as president was marked by deeply polarizing policies, including his stance on immigration, climate change, and foreign relations. Donald Trump’s views on abortion rights have been a significant point of controversy throughout his political career. As president, Donald Trump took a strong anti-abortion stance, advocating for policies that sought to restrict abortion access. He appointed three conservative justices to the Supreme Court, reshaping its ideological balance and contributing to the 2022 decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, which had established a constitutional right to abortion for nearly five decades. Trump’s support for this ruling, along with his backing of state-level abortion bans, has deepened divisions on the issue. His rhetoric around abortion has sparked fierce debates, with critics accusing him of undermining women’s reproductive rights, while his supporters argue that his actions align with pro-life values. His position continues to be a defining aspect of his controversial legacy.

Time’s Person of the Year always seems to stir up some debate, as the title is often given to figures whose influence—whether loved or loathed—leaves a lasting impact on the world. Over the years, some of the selections have been downright controversial, sparking conversations (and sometimes outrage) about who truly deserves the title. Below is a look at some of the most controversial figures chosen by Time over the years.

1. Adolf Hitler

Adolf Hitler’s selection as Time’s Person of the Year in 1938 remains one of the most controversial in the magazine’s history. At the time, Hitler had already established himself as a dangerous and aggressive force in Europe. The magazine’s 1938 edition noted his audacious, ruthless foreign policy, which included tearing up the Treaty of Versailles, rearming Germany, and making territorial expansions. That year, he annexed Austria and pushed forward with plans to seize Czechoslovakia’s Sudetenland, all while the world was still recovering from the scars of World War I. European leaders, hoping to avoid another devastating war, tried to appease him through diplomacy, allowing these annexations in exchange for peace. However, Hitler’s actions were anything but peaceful, and Time acknowledged that he had become the greatest threat to the democratic world. The magazine described him as the “greatest single news event” of the year, as his aggressive moves were a precursor to the larger war he would start with the invasion of Poland in 1939. This choice was, in hindsight, deeply controversial due to the scale of violence and destruction Hitler would later unleash.

2. Joseph Stalin

Joseph Stalin was named Time’s Person of the Year twice, in 1939 and 1942, for his significant impact on world events, though his selections were deeply controversial due to his brutal and authoritarian rule. In 1939, Stalin was recognized for his role in orchestrating the nonaggression pact between the Soviet Union and Nazi Germany, just days before World War II broke out. This historic agreement allowed Stalin to keep the Soviet Union out of the war for a while and shifted the balance of power in Europe, intensifying tensions between the Allies and the Axis Powers. Time described the pact as “world-shattering” and noted that while Stalin’s actions were not popular, they were undeniably influential.

Three years later, in 1942, Stalin was again named Person of the Year for his leadership during the Battle of Stalingrad, one of the most decisive battles of World War II. Time praised his determination and strategic thinking, highlighting how he led the Soviet Union through the battle that halted the German advance on the Eastern front. This victory marked a turning point in the war and significantly boosted the morale of the Allies. Time noted that had Stalin not stopped the Germans, Hitler might have achieved dominance over Europe.

Despite his recognition, Stalin’s leadership was marked by severe repression and terror. His rise to power involved purges, mass executions, and the use of fear to maintain control. While his role in defeating the Nazis earned him accolades, his ruthless methods and the human cost of his regime make his recognition as Person of the Year highly controversial, similar to the debate surrounding Adolf Hitler’s selection in 1938.

3. Henry Kissinger

In 1972, Henry Kissinger was named Time’s Person of the Year, alongside President Richard Nixon, for his role in reshaping global politics during the Cold War. As Secretary of State, Kissinger played a pivotal role in U.S. foreign policy, particularly through his efforts to ease tensions between the U.S. and the Soviet Union, as well as his diplomatic engagement with China. Time credited him with “the most profound rearrangement of the earth’s political powers since the beginning of the Cold War.”

However, Kissinger’s legacy is highly controversial. While his diplomatic achievements were significant, they were overshadowed by his involvement in the U.S. bombing campaigns in Vietnam and Cambodia, which caused immense civilian casualties. Under his direction, the U.S. carried out a secret bombing campaign in Cambodia, killing hundreds of thousands of civilians in an attempt to destroy communist forces. These actions, along with his role in the prolonged Vietnam War, have made him a polarizing figure. Critics accuse him of prioritizing geopolitical strategy over human rights, and his legacy is often associated with war crimes and atrocities that continue to shape debates about American foreign policy.

Time’s Person of the Year has always walked a razor-thin line between acknowledgment and glorification. While Time insists the selection is not an endorsement but a measure of influence—be it for good or ill—such choices inadvertently confer a platform, if not legitimacy, to those accused of committing atrocities. In an age where symbolism matters more than ever, should we question whether highlighting notorious figures adds historical clarity or inadvertently glorifies their infamy? As the controversy surrounding these choices persists, perhaps it’s time to rethink the balance between documenting influence and the ethical weight of amplifying it.
