A massive fire broke out at Karachi’s prominent shopping hub, Millennium Mall, in the early hours of Wednesday morning, leaving widespread destruction in its wake.

The blaze, which began around 4:00 AM, severely damaged over 250 shops and triggered renewed concerns about fire safety compliance in commercial buildings across the city.

The Incident

According to initial reports from rescue and fire department officials, the fire is believed to have originated on the third floor of the multi-storey commercial complex located on Rashid Minhas Road, in the Gulistan-e-Jauhar area. The fire reportedly spread rapidly due to the presence of flammable materials in garment and textile shops occupying the upper floors.

Eyewitnesses and early responders noted that flames were first seen rising from the rooftop, possibly stemming from an electrical short circuit in the generator or central control room. Within minutes, the fire engulfed large sections of the third and fourth floors of the building.

Response And Firefighting Efforts

A swift response was launched by the Karachi Fire Department, which deployed 12 fire tenders, two water bowsers, and two snorkels to the scene. Despite facing challenges such as low water pressure and restricted access to upper floors, firefighters managed to bring the blaze under control after approximately four and a half hours of continuous effort.

Firefighters, along with rescue teams and Rangers, secured the area and ensured that residents of nearby buildings were safely evacuated as a precaution. Thankfully, no injuries or fatalities were reported, a fact attributed to the incident occurring before business hours.

Extent Of Damage

Initial estimates suggest that over 250 shops — primarily located on the third and fourth floors — were either completely destroyed or sustained heavy fire and smoke damage. The first and second floors experienced relatively minor impact, though several shops reported water and structural damage from the firefighting operation.

The exact financial losses have yet to be assessed, but traders on-site have already called it a multi-million rupee setback. Many shopkeepers, some of whom had invested their entire capital in inventory for the upcoming mid-season shopping, have demanded compensation and immediate investigation.

One of the most alarming revelations following the incident is the absence of adequate fire safety infrastructure in the mall. Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) and Sindh Building Control Authority (SBCA) officials confirmed that Millennium Mall lacked an operational fire alarm system, emergency exits, and fire extinguishers.

Aftermath And Investigation

Karachi Commissioner and relevant municipal authorities have launched a formal inquiry into the incident. The mall has been sealed off for safety inspections and damage assessment. Rescue teams remained on-site through the morning to eliminate the possibility of hidden fire pockets and ensure structural stability.

The Sindh government has also ordered a city-wide inspection of shopping centers and commercial complexes to verify compliance with fire safety regulations. Action has been promised against building owners and management found guilty of negligence.

The fire has sparked outrage among the business community and civil society, who are calling for stringent fire safety audits and improved urban disaster preparedness. Social media was flooded with images and videos showing thick smoke billowing from the mall, with many users questioning how such a large facility was allowed to operate without basic fire protection systems.

The Traders Association of Rashid Minhas Road has called for an emergency meeting to coordinate support for affected shopkeepers and press the authorities for relief measures.

This is a developing story. An official report on the cause and damages is expected to be released later this week.
