A massive fire broke out at Karachi’s prominent shopping hub, Millennium Mall, in the early hours of Wednesday morning, leaving widespread destruction in its wake.
The blaze, which began around 4:00 AM, severely damaged over 250 shops and triggered renewed concerns about fire safety compliance in commercial buildings across the city.
The Incident
According to initial reports from rescue and fire department officials, the fire is believed to have originated on the third floor of the multi-storey commercial complex located on Rashid Minhas Road, in the Gulistan-e-Jauhar area. The fire reportedly spread rapidly due to the presence of flammable materials in garment and textile shops occupying the upper floors.

Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) and Sindh Building Control Authority (SBCA) officials confirmed that Millennium Mall lacked an operational fire alarm system, emergency exits, and fire extinguishers.

Karachi Commissioner and relevant municipal authorities have launched a formal inquiry into the incident. The mall has been sealed off for safety inspections and damage assessment. Rescue teams remained on-site through the morning to eliminate the possibility of hidden fire pockets and ensure structural stability.
The Sindh government has also ordered a city-wide inspection of shopping centers and commercial complexes to verify compliance with fire safety regulations. Action has been promised against building owners and management found guilty of negligence.
The fire has sparked outrage among the business community and civil society, who are calling for stringent fire safety audits and improved urban disaster preparedness.
