In the web series Dear Bestie, Ayra is determined to keep things simple. She not only wants a modest wedding but also insists on paying for her share of wedding expenses herself instead of taking money from her parents. For her, the savings could also go toward upgrading her salon—a dream she’s been working hard to build. But her fiancé Zayan comes from a more affluent family, and since he’s their only son, his parents want nothing less than a grand celebration. The clash in expectations has caused friction between the couple and sparked a debate in the YouTube comment section about independence, family pride, and what a wedding should really stand for.

Audiences are obviously divided on Ayra’s stance and both sides feel strongly about their points of view.

The creators of Dear Bestie deserve credit for shining a light on a dilemma that feels all too real, what happens when two families from different social classes collide over wedding expectations. Ayra’s stance is clear and, to many, relatable. She wants to pay for her wedding expenses herself instead of asking her parents, and she believes it’s smarter to put money into her salon and her future rather than spending unnecessarily on a single day. Ayra also seems to feel strongly about unnecessary and lavish expenditure on weddings as she tells Zayan (when he wants to contribute towards the cost and keep it grand), “it’s about values.” Her practical and independent approach also reflects how a lot of young people think today. On the other hand, Zayan doesn’t come off as strong in this situation. By going along with his parents’ wishes, he seems to sideline Ayra’s concerns, which raises the question, shouldn’t he be trying harder to find common ground with her? At the same time, it’s not fair to completely dismiss his parents’ perspective either. For them, Zayan is their only son, and wanting to go all out for his wedding comes from a place of love, tradition, and pride.
The real problem here isn’t whether the wedding should be lavish or simple—it’s the lack of communication. Both Ayra and Zayan are so caught up in proving their point that they’re forgetting the bigger picture. A wedding is not just about one person’s vision; it’s about partnership. Ayra is right in wanting to be practical, and Zayan’s parents are right in wanting to celebrate but unless Ayra and Zayan sit down, talk honestly, and agree on a middle ground, the wedding will remain a source of conflict instead of joy.
