The fragile ceasefire between Hamas and Israel has collapsed following a wave of Israeli air and ground strikes that killed at least 104 Palestinians, including 24 children, according to medical sources in Gaza. The strikes mark a clear violation of the U.S.-brokered cease-fire framework.

According to the live-updates, the Israeli military launched multiple attacks overnight across densely populated areas of Gaza, including tents housing displaced families and homes in refugee-camp settings. The tally of at least 104 dead represents the highest single‐night death toll since the truce came into effect, and signals a severe escalation of hostilities.

The Violation Of The Cease-fire

The cease-fire had been deemed operational following months of stalled negotiations between Israel and Hamas, with brokered elements including hostage returns and humanitarian access. However, on this night Israel launched what its military described as “powerful strikes” in response to the death of one Israeli soldier.

Gazan medical officials say the strikes targeted multiple civilian areas: tent camps in al-Mawasi sheltering displaced people, residential blocks in Gaza City, and refugee camps such as Nuseirat. The large civilian death toll strongly suggests strikes were not limited solely to combat positions, raising serious questions about proportionality and distinction under international humanitarian law.

Israel’s military narrative framed the action as retaliation for a soldier’s death, and accused Hamas of delaying the hand-over of remains of hostages and failing to adhere to the earlier truce commitments. Meanwhile, Gazan officials argue that the truce has been used by Israel as a tactical pause, during which civilian infrastructure and vulnerable populations remained exposed.

Political Context

Benjamin Netanyahu, Prime Minister of Israel, issued an order for “immediate, forceful” strikes stating that Israel would not be constrained in defending its forces. According to reports, his office framed the escalation as necessary deterrence.

Analysts say that by initiating the military action while a truce ostensibly held, Netanyahu is signalling that Israel retains freedom of military manoeuvre despite diplomatic agreements – raising concerns among mediators that the cease-fire may be more of a lull than a durable peace.

Human Cost: Deaths, Injuries, And Devastation

The reported death toll of at least 104 in the most recent wave includes many children – 24 identified as minors. The strikes reportedly occurred in areas considered safe by many displaced Gazans, such as tented shelters and heavily populated camps, underscoring the danger civilians continue to face.

Hospitals in Gaza are already operating beyond capacity; as rubble is cleared, more victims may be revealed. One live update notes that the death toll could still rise.

Beyond immediate fatalities, the attacks have further eroded any sense of safety among Gaza’s civilian population. The tent region in al‑Mawasi, home to families already uprooted by surprise attacks by Israel, was hit in the early hours, implying no safe zone remains.

Donald Trump’s Latest Statement

President Trump reiterated that “nothing is going to jeopardise” the cease-fire — yet his statement includes a paradoxical element: he affirmed Israel “has the right to hit back” if its soldiers are killed. According to Al Jazeera, Trump said Israel’s retaliation following the soldier’s death was justified, and that “Hamas has to behave.”

This dual message – backing the truce publicly while implicitly supporting Israeli military action – has left mediators and international observers concerned that U.S. assurances may lack the force needed to prevent further escalation. The cease-fire appears to be undercut by ambiguity in strategic backing.

This incident highlights that the cease-fire was always extremely fragile. By launching a deadly strike while the truce was purportedly in force, Israel has exposed the limits of diplomatic frameworks in the face of immediate military priorities. With dozens of civilians, including children, killed, the moral and humanitarian fault lines are stark – and the path ahead remains uncertain.

This is a developing story.
