15 Reasons The Lincoln Lawyer Season 4 Just Didn’t Hit the Same

I finally gave The Lincoln Lawyer a proper watch last year—after everyone kept insisting I would love it. And honestly? I did. Mickey Haller in his sharp suits, expensive taste, that perfect mix of wit and charm… it’s hard not to be a little obsessed. Season 1 through 3 had me hooked, and after the cliffhanger at the end of Season 3, I was counting down the days for Season 4.

Did Season 4 of the courtroom (and out of courtroom) drama satisfy my cravings for slick courtroom drama, edge-of-your-seat investigations, and Mickey doing his thing? Mostly… not. While there were some brilliant flashes of tension and character moments, there were also quite a few misses. Here are 15 things that made Season 4 feel a little off, in my completely honest, no-filter opinion.

1. Mickey Stuck in Jail

Mickey in jail for most of the season was just… sad. He’s at his best when he’s out, running the streets of LA, investigating, scheming, and delivering those perfect quips. Watching him trapped in courtroom drama most episodes felt like missing the heart of the show.

2. Overloaded Courtroom Drama

I get it – courtroom tension is the bread and butter. But when every other scene is either a trial or legal procedure, it becomes repetitive. Especially since we all know Mickey will win eventually—where’s the suspense in that?

3. Dana Berg Needed More Depth

Dana Berg, aka “Deathrow Dana” or “Iceberg Dana,” had all these dramatic nicknames, but we never really got why she earned them. We see her being ruthless, but a little insight into her motivation, her strategy, her personality beyond “icy prosecutor” would’ve made her pop up rather than just frustrating. Also at the same time, something about Dana felt cartoonish and frustrating at times. Her courtroom antics were meant to intimidate, but sometimes they just annoyed.

4. Too Much Focus on Old Cases

There was far too much recycling of past cases and characters. I get that it’s supposed to provide context, especially with Sam being the victim and all, but for me, it felt like a filler. Also heads up, the FBI probe was unnecessary too. Just saying I wished for new twists, new stakes, not a retread of things I’ve already seen.

5. Losing Legal Was Upsetting

Legal is one of the pillars of the show and a source of sanity to Mickey. This season, losing him left a noticeable gap. His absence made the dynamic feel off – he brought grounding, humor, and that calm logic we rely on.

6. Maggie Switching Sides Was Delightful

Maggie switching sides was a tiny but satisfying plot point. From prosecutor to siding with the defendant, it felt somewhat oddly real. That sly smile, that gentle nod to true love never dying -ahh, little moments like this reminded me why I love this show.

7. Haley’s Bullying Was Underexplored

Haley’s bullying was mentioned but barely explored. She’s an important character being Mickey and Maggie’s daughter, and the season could’ve shown therapy sessions, coping strategies, or some meaningful action. Instead, it felt like a missed opportunity for depth.

8. Lack of Humor

Earlier seasons had snappy one-liners and clever banter. This season, the humor was sparse. Without it, the show felt heavier and a little too serious. Mickey Haller is fun, and this season forgot that part of him. although for me, Bamba was the real MVP for the humor (well the little humor that was there for mere minutes!)

9. Predictable Plot Beats

Several twists were obvious or telegraphed too early. There’s nothing worse than knowing what’s coming in a show built on suspense. The thrill was muted as a result.

10. Unrealistic Legal Moments

Some courtroom maneuvers felt like pure Hollywood magic. Clever tricks are one thing, but this season had moments that stretched believability and broke immersion.

11. Mickey’s Lack of Agency

Half the season, Mickey felt reactive instead of proactive. The character we love for his daring, quick thinking, and audacious moves was reduced to simply reacting to circumstances—and that left me disappointed. But what I did love though is that Mickey was vulnerable and I love it when characters are vulnerable, cry and still pick themselves up and go on for the people around them.

12. Side Plots Fell Flat

Several side plots didn’t land. They could’ve added spice or tension, but instead felt like filler that interrupted the pacing. Bamba needs justice,

13. Cisco and Mickey’s LA County Line Scene Was a Thrill

Finally, one scene did make my heart race: Mickey and Cisco racing to the LA County line before the clock strikes. The tension, pacing, stakes – it reminded me why I fell in love with this show in the first place.

14. Character Development Felt Uneven

Some characters, like Lorna, still feel underdeveloped despite the season focusing on them. Cisco – I love the character, the calm, cool, yet lowkey dangerous demeanor, but more could’ve been done. Side characters, especially Lorna’s own clients could’ve had more screentime. Just a thought!

15. Season Finale Payoff Was Underwhelming

The finale had its moments, but the payoff didn’t feel as satisfying as it could have. More risk, more punch, or a bit more cleverness could’ve elevated it to the high standard we expect from The Lincoln Lawyer.

All in all… did Season 4 hit the mark? Lowkey, no. Saying it sadly, it left me wanting more of the sharp wit, the edge-of-your-seat thrills, and the Mickey magic we’ve come to love. But hey, here’s hoping Season 5 redeems itself – if there is one, fingers crossed, because I’m definitely not ready to let go of this world just yet.

I totally agree the entire season was a dud. What happened to the writers this season, it seems they spent more time on Izzy and her wanna be girlfriend and on the homely DA. It just never clicked.
