Here’s What We Know So Far After WHO Declares Ebola Emergency

The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and parts of Uganda has now been officially declared a public health emergency of international concern by the World Health Organization. The situation is developing quickly, with rising infections, confirmed cross-border spread, and growing concern that the virus may be circulating more widely than what current reports are showing. While Ebola outbreaks are not new in this region, what makes this one especially worrying is the strain involved, the speed of spread, and the difficult conditions on the ground.

Ebola itself is a severe viral disease that spreads mainly through direct contact with infected bodily fluids. This includes blood, vomit, and other fluids, and it usually becomes contagious once symptoms begin to show. Early signs can feel like flu, such as fever, weakness, and body pain, but it can quickly worsen into vomiting, diarrhoea, and in some cases internal or external bleeding. The current outbreak is being caused by the Bundibugyo strain, which is one of the less common types of Ebola virus and does not currently have a widely approved vaccine or specific treatment available, making containment more challenging.

Right now, the outbreak is mainly centred in eastern DRC, particularly in Ituri province, with cases also confirmed in Uganda. Health agencies have reported hundreds of suspected infections and dozens of deaths, with numbers changing as surveillance continues. What has alarmed experts is that some cases have already appeared in different health zones and even crossed into urban areas like Kampala, suggesting movement of the virus beyond the original hotspot. Officials also believe the true scale could be larger than what is officially confirmed, mainly because of limited access to remote or conflict-affected regions.

The World Health Organization has declared the situation a PHEIC, which is a high-level global alert meant to trigger coordinated international response. However, it is not classified as a pandemic emergency. WHO has urged countries to strengthen surveillance, improve contact tracing, and increase border health checks, while also warning against travel bans or border closures, saying they often do more harm than good by pushing movement into unmonitored routes. International agencies are now working alongside local health ministries to scale up testing, treatment centres, and protective measures for frontline workers.

One of the biggest challenges in controlling the outbreak is the environment where it is spreading. Eastern Congo has been dealing with long-standing conflict, displacement, and weak healthcare infrastructure, which makes rapid response much harder. Many people live in areas with limited access to hospitals, and informal healthcare settings are common, which can increase transmission risk. On top of that, population movement across borders with Uganda and South Sudan adds another layer of difficulty in tracking the virus.

Despite the seriousness of the situation, experts are also pointing out that Ebola outbreaks in the DRC have been controlled before, although not easily. The response now includes stronger surveillance systems compared to past years, along with international coordination and emergency medical supplies being deployed. Still, officials warn that the coming days are critical in deciding whether the outbreak can be contained or whether it spreads further across the region.

For now, the focus remains on early detection, isolation of cases, safe treatment, and preventing further spread across communities and borders. Health authorities are treating the situation as urgent, but not yet uncontrollable, with the hope that fast action can prevent it from becoming a larger regional crisis.
