With the heat getting harsher by the day, and temperatures soaring to 40 plus, stepping outside for even a little while can leave you drained, dizzy and exhausted. The weather lately has not just been “summer hot” — it genuinely feels difficult to function in at times. From headaches and dehydration to skin irritation and nosebleeds, extreme heat can affect the body much faster than people realise. And honestly, many of us don’t even notice the warning signs until we already feel sick.

The good thing though is that staying safe in this weather does not always require expensive products or complicated routines. Small habits throughout the day can make a massive difference. Keeping yourself cool, hydrated and protected from direct sun exposure can help your body handle the heat much better, especially during peak afternoon hours when temperatures feel unbearable. Here are a few simple but important ways to take care of yourself this summer.

1. Hydration is not optional

One of the biggest mistakes people make in this weather is waiting until they feel thirsty to drink water. By then, your body is already dehydrated. In extreme heat, the body loses fluids constantly through sweat, and plain water alone sometimes is not enough to restore what is lost. Adding electrolytes, ORS, or even a homemade lemon water with a pinch of salt can help replenish minerals and keep energy levels stable.

Many people complain of weakness, dizziness or headaches during hot days and often it’s simply because their body is lacking fluids. Carrying a water bottle around, sipping throughout the day and avoiding too much caffeine can honestly help more than people think. Your body needs extra support in this weather, not less.

2. Carry an umbrella whenever possible

Umbrellas are not just for rain anymore. Walking under direct sunlight, especially during afternoon hours, exposes your skin and body to intense heat and harmful UV rays. Even a short walk outside can leave the face feeling burnt and overheated. Carrying an umbrella creates an instant layer of protection and helps reduce direct exposure to the sun.

It may seem like a small thing, but it genuinely helps keep the body temperature lower. People often focus only on tanning or darkening skin, but harsh sun exposure can also lead to heat exhaustion and irritation. Protecting your face and head from constant sunlight is important, especially in weather this intense.

3. Eat foods that help cool the body down

Heavy oily meals in extreme heat can make the body feel even more sluggish. Instead, opting for water-rich foods can help you stay refreshed and hydrated naturally. Fruits like watermelon, cucumber, oranges and melons are full of water content and feel cooling in this weather. They are light on the stomach while also helping the body retain fluids.

Watermelon especially becomes everyone’s favourite in summer for a reason. It is refreshing, hydrating and contains fibre too, which helps digestion stay balanced in the heat. Even adding yoghurt, smoothies or chilled fruit bowls into your routine can help the body feel lighter during long hot days.

4. Keep your body temperature cool

When someone stays in the sun for too long, the body heats up very quickly, especially the head and neck area. Many people experience dizziness, nausea, fatigue and sometimes even nosebleeds because of prolonged heat exposure. Keeping the body cool is extremely important during these months.

Simple things like placing an ice pack or cold cloth on the back of the neck, forehead or wrists can provide almost instant relief. Washing your face with cool water, sitting near a fan after coming indoors and avoiding direct heat for too long can also help regulate body temperature better. Sometimes people underestimate how seriously heat affects the body until they physically feel unwell.

5. Do not skip sunscreen

A lot of people only think of sunscreen as something for beaches or vacations, but daily sun exposure damages the skin more than we realise. Harsh UV rays can cause sunburn, irritation, pigmentation and long-term skin damage, especially in peak summer weather. Even if someone is outside for a short amount of time, sunscreen still matters.

Using sunscreen before stepping out helps create a protective barrier between the skin and the sun. It does not have to be anything fancy, but applying it consistently can make a visible difference over time. Skin protection is just as important as staying hydrated during extreme heat.

The summer heat this year feels exhausting for almost everyone, and honestly the body can only tolerate so much before it starts reacting. Taking care of yourself during this weather is less about being “extra careful” and more about listening to what your body actually needs. Staying cool, drinking enough fluids and protecting yourself from the sun may sound basic, but these small habits can genuinely prevent bigger health issues later on.
