There are stars, and then there are legends who shape an entire industry, Shamim Ara was one of those rare legends – a woman whose grace, resilience, and artistry transformed Pakistani cinema forever.

Get To Know Shamim Ara: Classic Pakistani Actress & Director Honoured By Sanam Saeed At Cannes 2026

This year at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival, Sanam Saeed chose to honour that legacy on one of the world’s biggest cinematic stages, reminding audiences that long before global red carpets and international recognition, there were women like Shamim Ara building the foundations of Pakistani film with courage and conviction. Known as one of the defining faces of Lollywood’s golden era, Shamim Ara was far more than just a beloved actress. She was a trailblazer – an actor, producer, and director who carved a space for women in an industry overwhelmingly dominated by men. Her career spanned decades, yet her influence stretched even further, shaping generations of performers who came after her.

Born Putli Bai, but you probably know her as Shamim Ara, she rose to fame in the 1950s, capturing hearts with her elegance and the emotional depth she brought to her roles. People were drawn in by her expressive performances, her striking beauty, and that powerful presence she had on screen. But what really set her apart was her drive to grow and change. Back then, it was rare for women to have any creative say behind the camera, yet she took the leap into directing and producing. She was breaking down barriers that many didn’t even notice were there.

For many Pakistanis, Shamim Ara represents a classic golden era when films felt emotional, dramatic, and strongly connected to culture. But her story is not just about the past. It is also about change, strength, and a lasting impact that never faded. As Sanam Saeed said before her Cannes appearance, Shamim Ara’s influence “wasn’t loud, it was foundational.”

But many people – especially Gen Z – might not know much about her, so here are a few things to know her better:

1. She Introduced Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan’s Voice to Mainstream Pakistani Cinema

In the mid-1990s, Shamim Ara encouraged Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan to work on music for a Pakistani film, even though he was already involved in big international projects and collaborations. He agreed to compose for the film Pal Do Pal, which became one of his later film projects. The soundtrack also featured other singers like Humera Channa and Tehseen Javed. The film was released around 1996–1997, and it ended up being closely linked with the final chapter of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan’s life, as he passed away in 1997.

2. She Became One of Pakistan’s First Female Film Directors

Shamim Ara broke one of Pakistani cinema’s biggest barriers by stepping behind the camera as a director and producer in the 1970s. In an industry almost entirely run by men, she proved that women could run film sets, make creative decisions, and shape how stories are told on screen. Some of her notable films as a director/producer include Sultana (1979), Miss Hong Kong (1992), and Ajaib Khana (1998). Through projects like these, Shamim Ara stepped into a space where very few women had gone before, and made it easier for others to follow.

3. She Redefined Female Characters in Lollywood

Before Shamim Ara came along, women in Pakistani films were usually written in pretty limited ways – often just as love interests or supporting characters who revolved around the male lead. What she did was change that feeling on screen. In films like Saheli (1960), she was part of a story where women’s friendships and emotions actually took center stage, which was quite new for that time. In Doraha (1967), she played a role that wasn’t just about romance – it was about tough choices, heartbreak, and inner conflict, which made the character feel real and layered. And in Aisa Bhi Hota Hai (1964), she was seen in a more grounded, emotional space, showing women dealing with everyday pressures and struggles.

Slowly, through performances like these, she helped shift how heroines were seen in Pakistani cinema – not just as side characters in someone else’s story, but as the emotional heart of it.

4. A Consistent Favourite At The Nigar Awards

Shamim Ara shared a long, special connection with the Nigar Awards – something she herself valued greatly in her journey. She first won for Best Supporting Actress in Saheli, and from there her career only grew stronger. Over the years, she went on to win Best Actress awards for films like Farangi, Naila, Lakhon Main Aik, and Saiqa, showing how she moved from a rising star to one of the most respected names in the industry.

What makes it even more interesting is how her success didn’t stay limited to acting. When she turned producer, her film Saiqa (1968) was also honoured as Best Film, and later in the 1990s, she even picked up back-to-back Best Director awards for films like Haathi Mere Saathi and Aakhri Mujra. By the end of it all, she wasn’t just winning awards – she was winning them in almost every role she took on, from actress to filmmaker.

Shamim Ara’s journey is more than just a chapter in Pakistani cinema – it’s part of its foundation. Shamim Ara subtly shifted what it meant to be a woman in the film world. From carrying major roles on screen to stepping behind the camera as a director and producer, she helped open a space that simply didn’t exist for women before her. Her work changed expectations – not just for how women were seen in stories, but for who was allowed to tell those stories in the first place.

Even today, her influence still shows up in subtle but powerful ways. Shamim Ara worked on 90+ films across acting, production, and direction, building a career that touched almost every era of Pakistani cinema. Whether it’s actresses taking on more complex, central roles or women moving into direction and production in Pakistani cinema, the path she helped create is still being walked on. And that’s what makes her legacy lasting – she left behind a way forward.

She passed away on 5 August 2016, but even after her death, her presence still lives on in the stories Pakistani cinema continues to tell – and in the space she helped open for women who followed after her.
