Lionel Messi & Baby Lamine Yamal: The Viral Photo and 8 Interesting Facts

At the time, neither Messi nor anyone else could have imagined that the baby in his arms would one day become Lamine Yamal, the teenage sensation now carrying Barcelona’s future. After the photo resurfaced years later, it quickly went viral around the world, with fans amazed by the incredible coincidence linking two generations of Barcelona stars.

Here’s the fascinating story behind the iconic image and 8 interesting facts you may not know.

1. The photo is 100% real, not AI

Following the viral picture on social media, numerous fans were left wondering whether the image was AI created. Official confirmation from UNICEF reveals that the images are authentic and were photographed during an actual charity photo shoot almost 19 years ago.

Yes, those photos you’ve seen are real.

More than 18 years ago, a baby named Lamine Yamal and his mom Sheila met Lionel Messi at a UNICEF fundraising photoshoot.

2. The photo was taken during Messi’s first major rise at Barcelona

The famous image was captured in September 2007, just months after Lionel Messi had started becoming a global football name. At that time, he was wearing Barcelona’s iconic No. 19 shirt and was beginning to attract worldwide attention after impressive performances in La Liga and the Champions League.

What makes the timing special is that the photo captured Messi at the exact point between being a talented youngster and becoming a football icon. Just a few years later, he would dominate world football, win multiple Ballon d’Or awards, and become Barcelona’s all-time leading scorer. Meanwhile, the baby in the photo was still years away from even touching a football professionally.

3. The shoot happened at Camp Nou

These images were not captured either at home or at the hospital.

The pictures were captured in FC Barcelona’s Camp Nou Stadium, in particular in one of the changing rooms where there was a blue plastic bathtub installed for the purpose of the charity event. In fact, the idea of using the bathtub was inspired by photographer Joan Monfort, while he was bathing his daughter.

4. Yamal’s family won a raffle

The meeting took place purely by coincidence.

Lamine Yamal’s parents had taken part in the charity lottery run jointly by UNICEF and FC Barcelona, along with the Barcelona foundation and the publication, Diario Sport.

Successful applicants received the right to have their child be photographed with one of the Barcelona first team players, and Lamine got matched with Lionel Messi.

5. The photos were part of a UNICEF charity calendar

The well-known photo shoot had no commercial agenda whatsoever.

In fact, it was part of the 2008 FC Barcelona charity calendar which was to help fund UNICEF programs as well as charitable institutions dealing with children in Catalonia.

Each of the footballers from Barcelona was photographed with a set of kids to generate funds for humanitarian organizations.

6. The photographer almost missed the perfect shot

The now-famous image almost never happened. Photographer Joan Monfort later recalled that Lionel Messi was naturally quiet and reserved, especially around such a young baby, making the photoshoot a little awkward at first. Since Lamine was only a few months old, getting both of them to cooperate wasn’t easy.

It took patience and several attempts before Monfort captured the now-iconic moment of Messi gently bathing the smiling baby, a photograph that would remain largely forgotten for nearly 17 years before becoming a global sensation.

7. The world didn’t know the baby’s identity until 2024

For many years, nobody knew who that baby was.

The photos were virtually unknown until Lamine Yamal’s father shared the images via Instagram in 2024 along with the hashtag “The beginning of two legends.”

That’s when fans realized the baby in Messi’s arms had become Barcelona’s newest wonderkid.

8. The age gap between Messi and Lamine Yamal is just over 20 years

Lionel Messi was born on June 24, 1987, while Lamine Yamal was born on July 13, 2007, making the age difference between them 20 years.

When Messi held baby Lamine during the 2007 UNICEF photoshoot, Messi was only 20 years old and just beginning his journey toward becoming Barcelona’s greatest-ever player. Meanwhile, Yamal was only a few months old and would not make his Barcelona first-team debut until 2023, almost 16 years after that photo was taken. The image perfectly captures the gap between two different generations of Barcelona talent.

Football has produced countless iconic photographs, but very few come with a story as unexpected as this one. A picture that spent years away from the spotlight suddenly became one of the most recognizable images in the sport after fans discovered the identity of the child in Messi’s arms.

The photograph will likely remain a talking point for years, especially as Lamine Yamal continues to build his own career. What makes it so fascinating is that the world got a glimpse of a future superstar long before anyone knew his name.
