There are movies you watch once and move on from, and then there are trilogies that somehow become a weekend event. You tell yourself you’ll watch just the first one, and before you know it, it’s 2 a.m., you’re emotionally attached to fictional characters, and you’re already pressing play on the next film.
Right before the weekend hit, I was watching The Hangover Part II today (for what feels like the hundredth time), and it reminded me how satisfying a genuinely good trilogy is. No overthinking, no scrolling for 40 minutes trying to decide what to watch. Just three films, one story (or three connected ones), and an excuse to disappear into another world for an entire weekend. So here are my top 6 trilogies which I think you should give a watch (or a rewatch)!
1. The Dark Knight Trilogy
If you ask me, this is still peak superhero cinema. Not because it’s Batman (although that definitely helps), but because Christopher Nolan somehow made comic book movies feel grounded without taking away what made Batman… well, Batman. Gotham feels real, the stakes are real, and every film somehow manages to outdo the last in its own way.
Then there’s Christian Bale. He’s one of those actors who completely disappears into a role, and his Bruce Wayne never feels like a billionaire pretending to be a hero. Add Heath Ledger’s unforgettable Joker, Tom Hardy’s terrifying Bane, Anne Hathaway’s Catwoman, Michael Caine, Gary Oldman, Morgan Freeman… honestly, the cast alone is enough reason to hit play. Whether it’s your first watch or your fifteenth, this trilogy somehow never gets old.
2. Before Trilogy
This trilogy is proof that you don’t need explosions or elaborate twists to keep people hooked. Sometimes all you need is two people talking.
Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy have one of the most natural on-screen dynamics you’ll ever watch. Before Sunrise gives you butterflies, Before Sunset feels like unfinished business, and Before Midnight is probably one of the most honest portrayals of long-term relationships ever put on screen. It’s sweet, nostalgic, occasionally heartbreaking, and somehow makes ordinary conversations feel more dramatic than most action movies. You’ll probably end up staring at your ceiling afterwards thinking about life this weekend, and honestly, that’s part of the experience.
3. The Godfather Trilogy
Yes, they’re long. Very long. The kind of long where you think, “Maybe I’ll watch this tomorrow instead.” But once you’re in, you’re in.
That’s the magic of The Godfather. The pacing never feels slow because every conversation matters, every decision changes something, and every scene pulls you deeper into the Corleone family. Marlon Brando and Al Pacino are phenomenal, and watching Michael Corleone’s transformation across the films is still one of cinema’s greatest character arcs. Sure, people debate the third film, but taken together, the trilogy is still essential viewing. They’re classics for a reason, and surprisingly easy to binge once you get going.
4. The Hangover Trilogy
I don’t think I’ll ever get tired of watching these movies. In fact, watching The Hangover Part II today is exactly what inspired this list.
Bradley Cooper’s Phil, Ed Helms’ permanently stressed Stu, Zach Galifianakis’ wonderfully chaotic Alan, and Justin Bartha’s poor Doug somehow find themselves in increasingly ridiculous situations every single time. The chemistry between the cast is what makes it work. You already know everything is going to go spectacularly wrong, but half the fun is watching them figure out how it all happened. Alan remains one of the funniest movie characters ever created, Stu somehow manages to become more panicked with every film, and somehow, despite the absolute chaos, you can’t help but want another adventure with the Wolfpack. Also I feel Bradley Cooper’s good looks peaked in the movies, but hey, maybe that’s just me!
5. The Equalizer Trilogy
If you ever needed a reminder that cool doesn’t have to be loud, watch Denzel Washington in The Equalizer films.
Robert McCall isn’t flashy. He doesn’t make long speeches or show off. He quietly walks into impossible situations, gives people one chance to do the right thing, and if they don’t… well, let’s just say things don’t end well for them. Denzel plays the role with so much restraint that every action scene feels earned instead of over-the-top. The trilogy also benefits from Antoine Fuqua’s direction, giving every film a slick, tense atmosphere. It’s one of those action franchises that’s surprisingly emotional underneath all the broken bones and perfectly timed revenge.
6. The Matrix Trilogy
I don’t think you can call yourself an action fan without watching The Matrix at least once. It’s one of those trilogies that completely pulls you into its world. You start the first movie thinking it’s just another action film, and suddenly you’re questioning reality, Googling fan theories, and trying to wrap your head around what you just watched. It’s confusing at times, yes, but that’s half the fun.
Keanu Reeves was born to play Neo. Add Carrie-Anne Moss’ Trinity, Laurence Fishburne’s iconic Morpheus, and Hugo Weaving’s Agent Smith, and you’ve got one of the coolest casts in sci-fi. Then there are the action sequences. Even today, the slow-motion fights and “bullet time” moments haven’t lost their charm. The trilogy doesn’t spoon-feed you anything, but that’s exactly why it’s so rewarding. Every rewatch makes you notice something you completely missed the first time.
Some weekends are for going out. Others are for ordering your favourite food, ignoring every text that isn’t urgent, and spending the next 8 to 10 hours with characters that feel like old friends. And you pick the coming weekend vibe.Whether you’re watching Batman protect Gotham, Phil and the Wolfpack somehow making every bad decision possible, Robert McCall quietly taking care of business, Neo questioning reality, Jesse and Céline making you believe in love again, or the Corleones proving that family is complicated, these trilogies are worth every minute. Just don’t blame us when you say, “I’ll only watch one,” and suddenly it’s Sunday night and you’ve finished all three.
