Dar-e-Nijaat: The drama holds up a mirror to all of us, practicing our faith in different ways.
Does Zamil believe he can find peace if he follows all the rituals? Is Zaryab happy with her present lifestyle, or do Dadi’s words tug at her conscience sometimes? What guilt is Khushbakht hiding? Does Abu Bakr represent the perfect example of our faith, or will he have his test too?
Through the interaction of her characters, Umera Ahmed shows us all the worlds we inhabit as followers of the Muslim faith.
Zamil feels lost. He is trying to become a practicing Muslim and thinks that the only person between him and his faith is Zaryab.
Zaryab is confused by Zamil’s sudden change and unpredictable meltdowns, asking him if religion shouldn’t make us kinder. She listens to her Dadi’s words, possibly turning them over in her mind silently, but then reverts back to her upbringing and what she has grown up to think is right.
The soothing Quranic tilawat is a beautiful way to start the episode. In Abu Bakr, we see an individual who lives his faith mindfully. Every action in his life is guided by his awareness of and respect for religious principles.
Khushbakht has walked a journey where she possibly drew strength from her religion, especially at a time when she felt completely abandoned.
Dadi reminds us of all the ills that might befall us if we do not heed the guiding principles of Islam.
All these characters still have a journey, and each is on a different stage in their path toward their creator.
Will Abu Bakr be able to bear the truth about his mother’s past? Will Zaryab be able to walk away from Zamil, and Zamil from her?
How will Dadi understand that girls must raise a voice in their marriage, even if the decision to marry was their own? Human beings are allowed to err, and that too is their journey.
