Emmys 2026: 5 Best Moments From The Night That Had Us Laughing, Crying And Screaming

The Emmys came, handed out a frankly ridiculous number of awards, reunited some of our favourite people, made us emotional when we least expected it and gave us a few moments that were simply too good not to talk about. From heartfelt tributes that had everyone reaching for tissues to celebrity interactions that felt like someone accidentally turned the group chat into a live television broadcast, this year’s ceremony had a little bit of everything.

And honestly, that is probably what made the night so fun. Yes, there were historic wins, record-breaking shows and plenty of speeches, but some of the moments that stayed with us had absolutely nothing to do with who took home a trophy. These were the moments that made us pause, scream at the screen, laugh, or quietly realise that, yep, we are definitely going to be talking about this one tomorrow.

Catherine O’Hara’s Tribute Had Us In Our Feelings

If there was one moment that immediately got the Emmys in the feels, it was the tribute to the late Catherine O’Hara.

Her onscreen children came together to remember her, and seeing Macaulay Culkin, Dan Levy and Annie Murphy on that stage was already enough to make the whole thing feel incredibly personal. Culkin, who worked with O’Hara in Home Alone, spoke about her with the kind of affection that made it feel less like a formal awards-show tribute and more like someone remembering a person they genuinely loved. And yes, hearing him call her “Mama” absolutely did not help anyone keep their mascara intact.

Levy and Murphy, her Schitt’s Creek children, brought their own memories and stories, reminding everyone just how much O’Hara meant to the people who actually had the privilege of working with her. The tribute then flowed into the In Memoriam segment, with Noah Kahan performing Bridge Over Troubled Water. It was tender, nostalgic and, frankly, the kind of Emmy moment that leaves you staring at the screen for a second afterwards.

And because the Emmys apparently wanted us to cry twice, Dolly Parton was also honoured during the ceremony, with Reba McEntire paying tribute to the legendary singer with Apalachan Memories.

Widow’s Bay Basically Said: Thanks For Coming

If you blinked during the Emmys, you may have missed another Widow’s Bay win. And then another. And another.

The Apple TV comedy absolutely dominated the night, taking home a record-breaking haul and becoming the most awarded comedy in Emmy history. It picked up major wins including Outstanding Comedy Series, while Matthew Rhys also made history with his wins across different acting categories.

At some point, it stopped feeling like an awards race and started feeling like Widow’s Bay had simply moved into the Emmys and decided it lived there now. The show’s success was hardly a quiet one either. From the acting wins to the directing and writing awards, it was everywhere. If this year’s Emmys proved anything, it is that Widow’s Bay is officially no longer the new kid on the block. It is very much the show everyone’s talking about.

Woody Harrelson And Matthew McConaughey Together Again? Our Hearts Said Yes

There are some celebrity friendships that just make people happy, and Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey are very much one of them. The longtime friends and True Detective co-stars shared the stage to present the night’s final award, and naturally, the Emmys could not just let them walk up, announce a winner and leave. Instead, the pair ended up stretching the moment out while joking about their upcoming Apple TV comedy Brothers.

The show, which premieres September 23, takes their real-life friendship — and the bizarre long-running possibility that they could actually be half-brothers — and turns it into a fictional comedy. Yes, that is apparently a real premise.

Watching the two of them together again was basically a little True Detective nostalgia bomb, except considerably less depressing. Their chemistry is still there, the bromance is still bromancing, and now we have Brothers to look forward to. Honestly, we’ll take it.

Marcello Hernández Shooting His Shot At Zendaya Was Everything

Marcello Hernández had one job: present an award. Instead, he saw Zendaya, Oscar Isaac, Matthew McConaughey, and Harrison Ford sitting in the audience and decided this was his moment.

The Saturday Night Live star openly admitted that he had planned to play it cool, realised he absolutely could not do that, and proceeded to invite Zendaya and “Espider-Man” to dinner at his house. The camera then cut to Zendaya and Tom Holland, who were both laughing at the unexpected invitation.

It was the kind of completely unserious celebrity interaction that award shows need more of. No carefully rehearsed Hollywood answer, no pretending everyone in the room is just casually familiar with everyone else.

And honestly? Respect the confidence.

Taylor Swift Didn’t Even Have To Show Up To Steal A Moment

Taylor Swift was not actually sitting in the Emmy audience, but somehow she still managed to make herself part of the night’s conversation. The singer appeared in a surprise pre-recorded Law & Order: SVU sketch with host Mariska Hargitay, playing into the speculation over whether she would turn up at the ceremony. It was a clever little wink at the audience and exactly the sort of celebrity cameo that makes people immediately start talking online.

And that was the fun of it: the Emmys didn’t need Taylor to walk the red carpet or sit through three hours of awards. They just needed her to pop up unexpectedly and make everyone go, WAIT, IS THAT TAYLOR SWIFT?

Between the emotional tributes, Widow’s Bay making Emmy history, two Hollywood besties reminding us why we love them, Marcello Hernández shooting his shot and Taylor Swift casually appearing without actually appearing, the 2026 Emmys had plenty of moments worth remembering.

Because at the end of the night, it is rarely just the winners we remember. Sometimes it is the person who made us cry, the reunion we didn’t know we needed, or one completely unhinged dinner invitation that has us thinking, Okay, but did Zendaya actually say yes?
