Some characters stay with us because we see a little of ourselves in them; others because we wish someone had understood them better. Aangan gives us both. Within a household shaped by constant conflict, expectations, and double standards, each character finds a different way to cope. Some hold on to love, some question what they have been taught, and some simply look for a way out. We may not always agree with their choices, but there is often something painfully understandable behind them.

Chammi: Fooled by Jameel, she remains the same chirpy, chulbuli Chammi even after he has moved on, having used her money.
Safdar: Driven by his love for Tehmina, he suffers all the disrespect from his mami.
Tehmina: Stuck between her mother and Safdar, the love of her life, both his love and her mother’s hatred burn her deeply inside.
Aliya (Bitto): The youngest but also the most sensitive, she is deeply affected by her parents’ constant fights and questions everyone’s double standards.
Jameel: Such a grey character. He did feel something for Chammi initially, but the insecurities created by his father’s constant disapproval shape his decisions, which are reactive rather than his own true choices.
Kusum: Suffocated by the religious restrictions placed on her as a widow, she runs away. It causes a major storm, but her own future is now uncertain.
What makes these characters worth discussing is how differently they respond to the hurt around them. Chammi’s cheerfulness, Safdar’s endurance, Tehmina’s anguish, Aliya’s questions, Jameel’s insecurities, and Kusum’s escape all leave us with something to think about. Understanding them does not mean excusing everything they do, but it does make judging them a little harder. Which Aangan character did you feel most drawn to, and did your opinion of them change as their story unfolded?
