Did Malala Yousafzai just pick the wrong cause, or the wrong words? Twitter is at war over this one – literally, but what causes our desi sentiments to fire up every time Malala exercises her twitter finger? Find out what got us going this time.

What Malala Tweeted & What She SHOULD Have Tweeted Instead?

We give you a summary of some of the tweets (and there were many) as Malala trended for 2 days after she posted THIS tweet on her twitter handle!

The violence in Jerusalem – especially against children – is unbearable. This long conflict has cost many children their lives and their futures. Leaders must act immediately – there is no peace when children and civilians are not safe. #AlAqsa https://t.co/bLv3XyA1OV

— Malala Yousafzai (@Malala) May 10, 2021

And then THIS Happened…

Malala beta , the situation in Jerusalem is as much a “ conflict “ as the invasion of Swat by Taliban was .
Incase you missed the recent news , it was not only the “ children “ that were attacked viciously.

Please update yourself before embarrassing yourself . https://t.co/xnyH1PQEso

Malala’s Tweets Were Edited & ‘Fixed’

ملالئ په ژبه چاړۍ‌ شي چي د‌ یهودو د يرې د وجې صفا وینا نه شي کولې که چري ته‌واقعی مسلمانه ئي نه ستا په ژبه د مسلمان نوم ولي نه‌رازی 🥺 pic.twitter.com/cfdkPU1t7y

— Muhammad Abrar (@Us_zai) May 11, 2021

She did get a bit of support …

At least she is speaking against atrocities it is specially important to mention children who are the innocent souls lost in the conflict and it is😥always brutal to attack children Don't you have children why you are speaking against this we need voices in favour of Palestinians

— mahem (@mahem2019) May 11, 2021

The debate turned into a language lesson as Malala was schooled on expression & correct usage of vocabulary.

If history is anything to go by then we are all sitting on illegally occupied land.

— Eesha (@eesha108) May 11, 2021

Why did Malala mention children specifically? When so many adults are under attack as well, and have suffered the effects of ‘terrorism’…oops, she didn’t use the T word though …that was the problem?

I think it's not time to think or talk about legal or illegal occupation. Get to the point. Every life is worth to be saved. Whether it's of child or adult.

— Esha Butt 🐰🇵🇰 (@EshaButt2298) May 11, 2021

And then the 36 word statement was examined – word for word…’especially vs only’ ?

She mentioned violence in Jerusalem ESPECIALLY against children not ONLY against children. Critics always look for one word to scratch rather the whole sentence. Pitty. Nothing new.

— Wasif Qayyum (@WasifQayyum) May 11, 2021

So Malala stirs up a storm (almost) every time she uses her twitter finger. But the question is, are Twitterati right to go at her? Or is ‘Hate Malala on the agenda?

Okaayyyy point taken … that was a good one, despite the gravity of the situation …sarcasm drip there

Malala didn't name #Israel bec she doesn't recognize Israel.

A friend claimed 😂

— @AlmirahMalik (@AlmirahMalik) May 11, 2021

Of course, there is always the question why we don’t speak up at home? Valid that? But, does it mean we don’t speak out at all?

Those Muzlimz and Bakistanis who stay numb on #ShiaGenocide in their own country feeling gruesome pain for Palestine. Criticizing Malala and what not.
Ah, the double standards. Bhae kitnay chahray hain aap loagon ke?!

— Anum Batool Jaffry (@AnumJaffry) May 11, 2021

To the misogynists who found an opportunity to hate on malala Yousafzai, I hope you all choke on a cactus

— m (@naheinyaar) May 11, 2021

And here’s the REAL problem ‘ Two Malala tweets side by side … violence vs terrorism. was it a slip of the twitter finger or a deliberate attempt to soft tweet a very grave human rights violation?

In Kabul they are called terrorists but not in Israel. double face by #Malala when you are afraid of losing your visa and comforts. #GazaUnderAttack pic.twitter.com/Mi4Od0T54t

— Taimoor Hanif (@MrTaimoorHanif) May 11, 2021

To sum it up … Mahira Khan decided to use her twitter finger too… and this time, it was short, and to the point. No ambiguity there!

Call it out. Call it what it is. Terrorism. #PalestinianLivesMatter

— Mahira Khan (@TheMahiraKhan) May 11, 2021

And that, my dear folks, is how you tweet when you have a monumental Twitter following. You use it to influence the millions who look up to you for validation. Malala Yousufzai – Harvard might have taught you a lot, but there’s still a lot more to learn.

Shape or Ship Out, says Twitter. We’re not very forgiving so think twice or hold on to that twitter finger, this is not the time to mince your words.

All said and done, it is imperative that we shed light on all atrocities inflicted on innocent human beings across the world. Be it our own country or another’s. Only then can our voices ring true and be heard on every forum. Selective anger breeds selective solutions. Let’s try and be all inclusive, after all, one has to live with a conscience, and, twitter’s watching!
