Umer Shareef – You will be missed dearly

(1955 – 2021)

We bid farewell to an era, a legend, a creator of uncomplicated funny moments who provided comic relief to many at a time when comedy wasn’t even a thing.

Umer Sharif can be called the funny man who made the awam laugh. His take on events was both simple yet hilarious enough to tease a chuckle of the most sedate, sober, no nonsense Pakistani uncle or aunt. He wasn’t your Swinery or even Ali Gul Pir. He came at a time when comedy was still being defined as a stand up act. His take on the ordinary was extra ordinarily simple, yet cracked up many as he sought to entertain a crowd that was not just Pakistani, but across the border as well.

Prime Minister Imran Khan sent his condolences and recalled his services to the entertainment industry

Saddened to learn of Umar Sharif’s passing. I had the good fortune of touring with him to raise funds for SKMT. He was one of our great entertainers and will be missed. My prayers & condolences go to his family.
