‘Abey Khao’ is Pakistan’s first food truck owned and operated by an entirely deaf staff. The mobile food truck is currently located in different areas of Islamabad, including the F7 Markaz and The Millennium Universal College.
How It Started
This initiative was started by Ayesha Raza who is the only one in her family who can hear. Her parents and two brothers are either partially or completely deaf. Abey Khao was a way to help her brothers earn for themselves. It not only provided employment opportunities for Ayesha’s brothers but also for other hearing-impaired people living in Pakistan who otherwise do not have many options to earn a living in Pakistan.
She stated, “The majority of the deaf youth is unemployed in Pakistan, and they face issues like language barriers, inequality, and discrimination. At Abey Khao, customers embrace the deaf culture and place their orders in sign language.” (Source: Reuters)
Their Menu
According to their Instagram page, their menu includes six scrumptious burgers, popcorn chicken, wings, different kinds of fries, and even a chocolate dessert! Their food is also affordable as menu choices under 500 rupees, perfect for University going students!
To make it easier for their customers, they have put up a sign language board with simple phrases that can help them place their orders and communicate with the staff.
We feel this is a brilliant initiative that will not only grow but also pave the way to many employment opportunities for the hearing-impaired community living in the country.
