Karachi is in the midst of a gut-wrenching missing person case. A 14-year-old girl, Dua Zehra, has been missing for over a week now, yet there is still no trace of her or any major leads in the investigation.
Dua’s case has been getting a lot of media traction these past few days, especially after the girl’s parents were invited to ARY’s Ramazan special transmission, ‘Shan-e-Ramazan.’ Their pain, as they narrated how their teenage daughter went missing, was felt by the entire nation. More so when they revealed that their Masjid’s Imaam refused to announce Dua’s name because she is Shia. Pakistanis wondered if this is what we have come down to as a nation – our religious inclination/cast preceding basic humanity.
Here is everything we know about the case so far.
How It All Started
Dua Zehra went missing from Karachi’s Al-Falah area on April 16. She lives on the first floor and went to the ground floor to dispose garbage. She hasn’t been seen since.
Soon after, the Anti-Violent Crime Cell (AVCC) formed three teams and started working on the case. They were working diligently to recover the CCTV footage.
We’re taking all measures to find the girl and are in touch with her family to gather all information regarding her disappearance. A case has already been registered at the Al-Falah police station,” stated AVCC’s Chief Zubair Nazir Shaikh.
What Has Happened Till Now
Dua’s father claimed to have received 2 ransom calls, one on WhatsApp and the other from a telephone number. He has provided the details of the calls including the numbers to the police. “I do not have enmity with anyone and even my daughter was not going to school for the last one and a half years,” he stated.
Zubair Nazir Shaikh revealed the calls were traced and the suspects were taken into custody after the ransom calls.
Karachi police have been conducting several raids. In one of their raids, they didn’t find Dua but, found another girl who had been kept against her will.
The CCTV footage was released by the police on 21st April and claimed they found the footage of Dua getting into a car. According to the authorities, a video clip from the CCTV footage allegedly showed Dua Zehra getting into a white Suzuki late at night. Dua’s family had their doubts regarding the footage’s authenticity thus, they lodged a complaint. Upon investigation, the footage turned out to be fake, and the SHO who shared the clip, Badar Shakeel, was suspended.
On Saturday, police announced they would seek technical assistance & expertise from our intelligence agencies to make progress on the case. “We are focusing technically to solve the kidnapping case of the 14-year-old girl, Dua Zehra,” stated Zubair Nazir Shaikh. He further revealed that the Federal Investigation Agency’s Cyber Crime Wing (CCW) was collaborating with the police to help with the case.
Dua’s mysterious disappearance has shaken the country to its core. One cannot even begin to decipher what her parents must be going through. In this Holy month of Ramazan, we pray Dua is recovered soon, safe and sound.
