Pakistan is expected to experience a heatwave in the next few days and the temperature may exceed 50 degrees celsius. This past April was already the hottest April ever recorded. Pakistan’s harsh weather is a testament to the increasing global warming and worsening climate change conditions. There’s no denying that we are in the middle of a climate crisis. Not just Pakistan, but also our neighboring country, India. Scroll down to find 5 things you can do to survive this heatwave!

While staying hydrated is a given, here are 5 tips on how to survive this heatwave if you plan on leaving the house at all! (We sure aren’t).
1. Wear Light & Breathable Fabrics
Dark colors absorb heat, and that’s the last thing you want to do in the midst of a heatwave! Thus, it would be best to choose loose-fitted, light-colored, and breathable clothes so your body stays cool.
2. Say Good Bye To Outdoor Activities
Did anyone else get a quarantine flashback? Oh, the horror! But just like Covid, staying inside the house will protect you from the dreadful heat. Postpone your daytime activities but if you must get them done, choose a time when the weather is relatively cooler. Perhaps, 7 am till 11 am, or after midnight if you can!
3. No AC? No Problem!
If you don’t have air conditioning in your home, pick a public space such as a library that does have one and spend a few hours (especially daytime hours) there. Hey, something is better than nothing!
4. Give Yourself Frequent Breaks
Let’s come back to reality, Eid holidays are over and we are back to work. Stepping outside in the extreme heat will put you at risk of being dehydrated, lethargic, or getting a heat stroke, especially if your work requires you to be outdoors. Thus, you must take frequent breaks to drink cold fluids, recharge, and keep yourself cool. Oh and don’t forget to put on sunscreen and reapply when needed.
5. Keep Your Indoors Cool
Draw those curtains and keep the doors closed to avoid sunlight entering your house. Put aluminum foil-covered cardboards in your windows to reflect the heat.
While these are just temporary solutions, we must target the root of the problem and try to fix it. Let’s take a pledge to be more responsible towards the environment and spread awareness about the worsening climate change conditions in any way we can. Till then, stay cool!
