What a fabulous episode, with Basit really testing our patience throughout and then towards the end, totally winning hearts with an apology. Was Basit rude or justified in his behaviour, thanks to the greediness of Ayesha’s family?
Director Mussadik Malick takes you through an entire journey brilliantly, where we see another side of Basit – the controlling, obnoxious, full of himself, self-obsessed and maybe, borderline narcissist Basit. But then the director connects the pieces with his friend’s advice and Ayesha’s request to manifest the changeover in Basit, completely surprising us with a sixer and winning us over.
Is Basit Handling It Well?
While Basit was obnoxious and petty on how he reacted over the gulab jamun, over the phone call with Ayesha’s mom, about the clothes etc.., Ayesha’s family also gave him ample opportunities to act difficult. He might not really be so harsh in reality, but their greediness and their intrusion pushed him to his limits.
We must understand, he has been an only (spoilt) child throughout his life, he doesn’t really know how to deal with relationships. This, of course, in no way justifies his behaviour but only to make us all realise that Basit is going to walk a journey of his own, now that he is married to Ayesha.
Plus unfortunately, another point that seems to emerge here: That Ayesha’s financial status also makes him look down upon her and her family. Also the fact that her mother asked for money in return for Ayesha, unconsciously makes him feel he is entitled to this behaviour because in his mind, he feels he has paid the price for getting a wife.
But here is what saves the drama – his respect for Ayesha because he knows she is not in this relationship for money, makes him listen to her. His friend’s constant reminder about not being selfish, urging him to understand Ayesha’s point of view, finally make him realise his mistake.
We wish Basit had greeted Ayesha’s mother respectfully over the phone when he called her. He might have issues but we would like to see him observe basic manners (which he had been doing so far).
A Sweet Moment Just For A Few Seconds
Why did Ayesha leave Basit’s hand and go to the wash room? Now that he finally addressed the issue and apologise, why did she suddenly leave?
A note of appreciation for the DOP. The scene when Ayesha and Basit climb up the stairs together and then go their separate ways was beautifully shot and very impactful.
