Ayushmann Khurrana is at it again. From Bareilly Ki Barfi to Badhaai Ho and everything in between, he manages to sneak onto the radar with stories that vibe with mass audiences and strike a chord with us, saying it with humour, comic punchlines but yet, a heart & soul that shows the ordinary in extraordinary ways!
The topic is male gynaecologists in orthodox societies like India, and let me tell you, it’s no more popular in Pakistan. There is a widespread condition prevalent in desi communities – we want our daughters, wives and sisters not to step out into the big bad world, not to work overtime, or do night shifts, not to expose themselves to the rigors and hardships of society, a society we are part of, and we helped make, but … we want the same women to solely visit a female doctor, let alone gynaecologist!
Get The Drift?
Doctor G highlights this genius phenomenon in humorous ways because, how else do we tackle sticky topics in Pakistan and India? We do it with a laugh, a smile and a good ‘ol witty script. Because then, the men might listen too!
Shefali Shah and Ayushmann come together to give a story that gradually turns from light-hearted fun to serious business. As Shefali’s character, the senior doctor advises Dr. Uday Gupta aka Ayushmann

The dialogues are poignant in themselves, if we begin to de-layer their comic undertones. A male gynaecologist has to not only know his craft but also make a woman who visits a male gynaecologist feel safe, feel like a patient and not like a woman. And for that, the male doctor has to take the first step.
Mirroring Reality
The movie mimics frames in female gynae wards that are so very relatable to women who are, or have been pregnant. Not just that, but it also addresses preconditioned mindsets that treat a male gynaecologist as a questionable career choice for men.
Generational Societal Issue
Mohallay waale kya sochen ge, keh tum larkion ke (private parts) dehkte ho, toh kya sochen ge?
Aah, the problem runs deeper than you think! If society is to judge women, it judges men too. Any person who steps out of the pre-constructed boundaries of our conditioned lives and judgement sets, will put himself out there to be taken apart by a heavily opinionated majority.
The trailer keeps the humour going as it runs a background score by Ketan Sodha that keeps a smooth flow in story and events! The fast-paced frames, crisp dialogues and storytelling keep things moving. The plot, even in the under 3 minutes trailer, unravels to give us a feel, in fact, a mood to watch and wait for October 14th when the film is due to be released in cinemas.
It is interesting to note that although the theme has been tackled as a comedy, there are undercurrents of much more lurking beneath the surface.
Of male mindsets accepting a male gynaecologist to examine and treat their wives, of female mindsets accepting the change, of society as a whole, viewing the career choice with raised eyebrows and, of the man in question himself, who fought hard to switch to orthopaedics rather than take on gynaecology. Even more intimidating is the fact that he was perhaps the only male student in an all female gynaecology class!
Yeah, says the feminist in me. Women have done it for ages in other professions, now it’s your turn.
And bring on the laughter says the entertainment freak in me, I need the comedy to lighten the mood.
