The week just sped by, or at least, Mere Humsafar did as lots transpired, finally! From Baby Halza to Shah Jahan’s battle with good ‘ol Karma, it was all happening Thursday night! But then, the week slowed down to a crawl when we hit Meri Shehzadi, and even came to an ahem, grinding halt with Kaala Doriya. Habs kept us taking sides yet again – Ayesha, Basit, no, Ayesha, no, it’s Basit now! Kinda like watching a game of tennis as the ball raced from one side to another! Speaking of which, farewell dear Federer, we will miss, they sure don’t make ‘em like you anymore!

the week in dramas. habs, mere humsafar, kaala doriya

But back to the dramas!

Final Thoughts On Mere Humsafar

Despite the makers putting us through some dark moments as Hamza and Hala contemplated a future without each other, we were driven to the edge, and then of course, right back up (when there’s no place to go but up), they sprang the baby upon us! Nice strategy there. Kill them with an overkill storyline and then, when audiences have no place to go but up, the narrative finally takes a turn, and (because we are so invested in Halza), we clap, applause, and rain praise at the romance and vengeance too – Shah Jahan – that breath of Karma was long coming but it finally did, and we were just so glad Rumi didn’t have to pay for it.

But the question, before I move on… did Raees really have to be the one who cast the final die? I mean, what about the man himself? He wasn’t a totally clean slate here, definitely a part of what happened to Hala all those years. How will he pay for it? Or will he ever? Or is it reel life mimicking real life where nothing’s fair really?

Any bright answers are welcome!

Onwards to Mere Humnasheen

Was it not absolutely brilliant that destiny plans to bring Khajista & Hadi together in a cardiac surgeon time-lapse story? The fact that Khajista refused Amroz in marriage and named his child Darkhzai could only be topped by her revelation to Moray that had she followed her heart (married Hadi), she might not have opened doors for other girls in her region to take on Medicine as a career choice. Well now, hopefully, she lands her heart’s desire and drives her hospital too – patience and determination are goals to follow and Hiba Bukhari has done a stellar job in taking on this role. Well done there, you have shown us the light at the end of the tunnel – an uplifting story yet!

Next Up: Habs

So Habs is up next and audiences are divided on whether they should side with Ayesha, the girl who hid facts from her hubby, confided in his friend instead and kept hedging even when her husband questioned her directly, as opposed to, Basit who just happens to fly into a rage when a gulab jamun so much as spills onto his newly pressed shirt, or his wife doesn’t want to reveal the family shenanigans for fear he will look down upon her, and … who felt that he could keep a woman happy just by way of allowing her to live in the lap of luxury – oh my, Donald Trump wouldn’t have so many wives then, would he? And what of all the rich men in the world who have a broken relationships behind them? Basit you must learn from History, a wealthy man does not necessarily have a lifelong companion.

So, nobody’s super clean in Habs, because, at the end of the day, we’re all human and it takes two to quarrel. What didn’t happen, and we still hope it does, is the Fahad-Bano love story in the making that sort of, got derailed with this Ayesha-Fahad detour. So please come back on track. Because both these supporting characters have made quite a place in our hearts and we long to see two uncomplicated humans (if there were ever such a phrase) hit it off together!

What Meri Shehzadi Has In Store For Us

Sooo, what happened in Meri Shehzadi, the new kid on the block?

The story is laid out in a kinda one dimensional landscape but we’re not complaining. Because, not only do we have Urwa Hocane and Ali Rehman Khan but Qavi Sahab at his best (and definitely not one dimensional) and Shamim Hilaly giving him great company! This is the age for supporting characters and much as I find the plot intriguing, I really don’t want to go through the heartbreak that is Princess Diana. One life story and The Crown is enough, mind you. And with season 5 dropping in November, one wonders if we will end up watching ahem, Meri Shehzadi on HUM TV or Dr. Hasnat on Netflix? Tell me which one is it for you?

Kala Doriya – Hits & Misses

Aaand do we have to go there? Shall we wrap up or shall we give you just a mini peek into the world of Kaala Doriya? To pick up where we left off for supporting characters, I’d say that Samina Ahmed and Khalid Anam are the reasons I’m watching. And also because, I’m hoping the script picks up because Saima Akram Chaudhry and Danish Nawaz couldn’t have lost their touch so fast, or have they?

Kaala Doriya is a bit too loud, painful, and cliched as far as performances and dialogues go. What’s singularly going for the drama is the narrative where they address broken families and aging parents’ dilemma over how to continue their lives without hurting their grown-up children. A very apt theme to sound off on, now if only one could make it impactful, thought-provoking, and genuinely funny (where humour does come into play), because, we were told, and we expected, a comedy genre to play out here, but, we’re still waiting for the drop!

Bakhtawar Sends Out A Powerful Message

I would love to talk about Bakhtawar to round off. So, a performance and a half there from Yumna Zaidi as she turns Bakhtu against Bakhtawar, shows her the way and attempts to take hold of her destiny as a woman, and not under pretence of a man. The story has us in its hold and even as we wait for Dilawar to fall for his Bakhtawar under cover, we fear she might be snatched away by the evil Sheeda, or fall prey to the jealous Hoorain or worse still, Dilawar’s dad!

And that’s all folks. Keep watching and stay tuned for next week as I sign off to watch an episode of ‘This Is Us’ on Disney! Yeah, some of us need to breathe in between all that drama!
