The United Nations (UN) has released its World Social Report 2023, which includes a section on Pakistan. The report states that there are 22 million young people in Pakistan who are waiting to get married. This information us sourced from a census report by the UN’s Department of Economics and Social Affairs, which highlights the fact that every family in the country is seeking a suitable matrimonial relationship for their children.

Pre-marriage conversations are like assembling a puzzle – you need to make sure all the pieces fit before you can enjoy the final picture. These conversations may not be the most exciting, but they are crucial for a strong and happy marriage. It’s like taking a road trip together – you need to plan ahead, agree on the destination, and make sure you have enough snacks for the journey.

By holding these discussions, couples can establish a strong foundation for their marriage and avoid potential conflicts down the line. It’s also important to remember that while the wedding day is a special occasion, it only lasts for a day. Marriage, on the other hand, is a lifelong commitment that requires ongoing effort and communication.

It’s true that sometimes the things we don’t say can cause the most damage in our relationships. Unspoken expectations, hidden feelings, and conflicting values can fester and create tension over time. It’s important to remember that no relationship is perfect, but having open and honest conversations can help create more ease and deeper connections. Yes, it can be uncomfortable to bring up certain topics, but it’s worth it in the long run to avoid resentment and disconnection.

This is why we share with you a YouTube series “Marriage Conversations” which highlights the significant conversations that every couple has probably had at some stage of their relationship, so why not get the ball rolling before you say yes!

1. Conflicting Financial Goals

Before you say “I do” and ride off into the sunset together, there’s an important conversation you need to have – and no, it’s not about which Netflix show to binge-watch next. It’s time to talk about money, honey!

Money and where to spend it. Who’s saving & who’s spending… and who decides?

As a dual-income (or not) household, you both contribute to your finances, which is great. But it’s important to make sure you’re on the same page about your financial goals and boundaries. Do you want to save up for a big trip, buy a house, or invest in your future? Or maybe you want to splurge on fancy dinners and designer clothes? Whatever your priorities are, it’s important to communicate them clearly to avoid any misunderstandings or disagreements down the road.

Setting boundaries is also crucial. Are you comfortable sharing a joint account, or do you prefer to keep your finances separate? How much money can you spend without consulting each other? These are all important questions to ask each other and come to an agreement on.

2. Supporting a partner through depression

The advertisement emphasizes the significance of mental health in a relationship by showcasing a couple’s journey through the lows of depression. The woman in the advertisement shares her struggles with depression, and her partner reassures her that they will face it together.

Supporting a partner through depression

When one partner experiences mental health challenges, it can impact the entire relationship. It can be difficult for the partner who is struggling to communicate their needs and feelings, and it can be challenging for the other partner to know how best to support them.

Some individuals may fear being judged or rejected by their partners if they disclose their mental health struggles. This fear can stem from a lack of understanding of mental health, as well as societal messages that mental health issues are a sign of weakness or personal failure.

But the truth is, mental health struggles are really common – and it’s so important to be open and honest with your partner about what you’re going through.

When you’re in a relationship, it’s all about being there for each other through thick and thin. That means supporting each other through the ups and downs of mental health challenges, too. And by talking about mental health more openly and honestly, we can help break down the stigma and create a more supportive and understanding culture.

3. Partners in Progress: Embracing Non-Traditional Roles in Relationships

The conversation between the second couple in the advertisement is a great example of how important it is for partners to support each other’s dreams and aspirations, even if it means taking on a non-traditional role.

Do you mind your wife supporting you?

The woman’s response to her husband’s desire to start something of his own, “Do you mind your wife supporting you?” is a powerful message that highlights the need for breaking away from traditional gender roles.

The woman’s response shows that she’s not only willing to support her husband-to-be, but she’s also comfortable with the idea of taking on a supportive role. This type of support can be incredibly valuable in helping a partner achieve their goals and can strengthen the bond between partners as they work together towards a common goal. Ultimately, it’s important for couples to have open and honest conversations about their aspirations and to support each other in achieving them, regardless of gender roles or societal expectations.

While the advertisement we discussed shows couples addressing important issues and working towards solutions in a matter of minutes, it’s important to remember that in real life, these conversations and actions often take much longer. Relationships take work, and building a strong foundation based on open communication, mutual respect, and shared goals is a process that can take years to develop.

Starting these conversations is a crucial first step toward building a strong and healthy relationship. While it’s true that the journey to a successful partnership may be long and sometimes difficult, it’s important to remember that even small steps can make a big difference.

By beginning these conversations early and regularly, couples can establish a foundation of trust and understanding that can help them navigate challenges and build a stronger bond over time. And while some issues may take longer to resolve than others, even opening the lines of communication can be a positive step forward.
