9 Drama Scenes that impressed us this week

1. Aik Aur Pakeezah

It was the hug that brought relief and a flood of tears all at the same time. Aik Aur Pakeezah made us wait for this moment since quite a few episodes but when it came, it was perhaps the moment that made us heave a sizeable sigh of relief – finally, Pakeezah might get justice, finally, she is with someone who understands her pain. The initial hug left Pakeezah stunned till she noticed how desperately Saman had been looking for her, and then came the flood of tears and Pakeezah didn’t hold back now, letting it all out – Sehar Khan and Aamna Ilyas delivered an intensely moving performance and the story just took it to another level this moment on.

Aik Aur Pakeeza

When Pakeezah left the abode she and Faraz had taken up lodgings in, and bid goodbye to Deema, it was a moving farewell. In the toughest of life circunstances, to meet a human being who was sensitive enough to protect her, a total stranger who tried hard not to hurt her – Pakeezah felt the huamnity of it all and would have wanted to turn around and say something, to let Deema know how much she needed this, how much she appreciated it – a slight gesture, her turning around, hesitating at the foot ot the stairs, him bidding her goodbye, was enough to tug at out heartstrings – the silence and body language spoke volumes. Well played both!

Aliya eating the fruit brought by Pakeezah while she chatters on, mentioning how Pakeezah remembered to bring all of her father’s favourite fruits and none of Aliya’s – there were no plums, then switching the conversation earlier, (as Aslam mentioned the case), to her food burning on the stovetop brought home Aliya’s trauma and mind in denial, flitting topics, failing to register parts of conversation she doesn’t want to address and then, all of a sudden speaking it all out loud – how Pakeezah appeared weak and pale, and how she hardly spoke when she visited home. It was a heartbreaking portrayal from Nadia Afgan that moved us to tears.

Faraz dealing with his mother’s death, Pakeezah not able to fully comfort him, both in pain yet unable to express it to each other, when the right words fail, the emotions that overwhelm them – the scene was accentuated with theatrical pauses, awkward expressions and stilted dialogues – and in between the entire trauma, resurfaced the issue of the key to the bathroom, how it is at the end of the lane and has a padlock on it. The everyday in parallel with the unthinkable came together to evoke a disturbing reality these two inhabit presently – Sehar Khan and Nameer Khan delivered phenomenal performances.

2. SharPasand

Fida and Sanam arguing over the phone, The conversation was so relatable, not a dialogue or expression felt out of place as the manner in which the conversation spiraled into a full blown argument with Sanam and Fida feeling wronged – Fida trying to restrain himself, Sanam’s temper getting the better of her – the interaction levelled up with flawless timing from both Affan Waheed and Hareem Farooq – a scene that must have resonated with many couples watching.

Farasat strikes again as he falls into his usual chitchat mode – from handing Fida fruit chat to talking about migraines and later, pretending to give Fida some privacy, urging him to talk to Sanam, secretly gloating on the interaction and the success of his evil plans, the scene won in its simplicity – no grand gestures, only subtle conversation that was meant to put Fida at ease and suspect nothing. Fida is a fan of Farasat now and Sanam disapproving of him will land her in trouble, and Farasat knows that all too well!

3. Sara Aapi

Sara Aapi just aired its first two episodes and we just want to give a shout out to the team for the attention to detail. A visual of Sara’s Supermarket as well as the aisles in the grocery store, the seperate office rooms for the brothers, made it all appear super real. Storytelling goes up a level when creators take pains to add in the details and this time, we were watching.

4. Kafeel

This moment when Zeba is hit with memories from her past, when she contemplated going back to Jami, flashbacks of conversations with her father, the sadness and heaviness in her heart comes back to haunt her as once again, she turns to clearing cupboards to carry her through her helplessness. Sanam Saeed performed the scene with all heart and our hearts went out to Zeba and the life she lost – the cost of her decision to stay with Jami.

This meeting between Subuk and Daneen carried a conversation that was both meaningful and relatable. Subuk trying to add a sense of rationality by telling Daneen they come from two different worlds and can never be happy together and Daneen, lost in love, believeing in her power to make it happen – the conversation sparked many debates on whether Subuk might be right – love can’t always solve everything, or if Daneen could, eventually, make it work because of her genuine feelings for Subuk and of course, for the fact that they were after all both, good and pure souls. On point performances from both Aashir Wajahat and Areeka Haq checked all the boxes in this conversation – well played both!
