The major, global award season is here! The first big show of the year, the Golden Globes, aired Sunday night but viewers are not done talking about everything that went down. With the WGA and SAG strikes finally over, the event was just as star-studded as it has been in the past. As expected, the evening included some special winner speeches, problematic jokes, controversies, celebrity appearances and stunning red carpet looks. Of course, there were also plenty of weird, wild and unexpected things that happened as well.
Golden Globes 2024 kicked off with celebrities walking the red carpet, like Jennifer Lawrence, Taylor Swift, Timothée Chalamet, Selena Gomez, Meryl Streep and many more. The Golden Globes honors movies and TV released Jan. 1 through Dec. 31, 2023.
We present to you, the moments that have now become viral, the most iconic highlights, and the winners who stood out, both the predictable and, perhaps, the not-so-predictable ones! Trust us, it was truly an unpredictable night.
1. Barbie Snubbed?
Not only in a stand up comedy section, did the comedian Jo Koy diss Barbie as “a plastic doll with…” the movie was apparently snubbed and ignored for many categories which really was not predictable. Many though are rather shooketh at how being the most hyped movie of 2023, Barbie did not win any major awards at all! Yes it did win a newly created category – The Golden Globe for Cinematic and Box Office Achievement but it doesn’t really count or does it?
2. Oppenheimer’s Triple Sweep
Well, the two mega movies of 2023 movies seemed to barely battle it out at the Golden Globes this year. Oppenheimer made a clean sweep as it won 3 major awards. Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer starring Cillian Murphy, Robert Downey Jr. and Emily Blunt took a triple sweep. It won the awards for best male actor, best male supporting actor and best director.
3. Cillian Murphy’s Winning Speech After Winning Best Actor!
Upon winning the Best Actor – Motion Picture, Drama award, Cillian Murphy rushed to the stage, only to realize that he had his wife’s lipstick on his nose.
4. Succession Wins Best TV Drama Series
The show succession won the award for the best drama series. The HBO series won its third Globe in the category, following its victories at the 2020 and 2022 ceremonies.
5. A ‘Suits’ Reunion
The Michael Ross & Harvey Spector duo is back and is as iconic as ever. The Suits cast delighted fans by coming together to present the Best Drama Series award to the Succession cast. A truly iconic move!
Patrick J. Adams and Gabriel Macht started off on stage, later joined by former co-stars Sarah Rafferty and Gina Torres during Sunday night’s broadcast. Meghan Markle and Rick Hoffman, also part of the show, were not present for the mini-reunion.
6. Timothee Chalamet & Kylie Jenner Make An Appearance!
Even though Kylie Jenner and Timothée Chalamet didn’t arrive together on the carpet, they met up inside. The Wonka star got a nomination for his role in the new version of the Roald Dahl story and wore a glittery jacket. Jenner matched his style with a backless, lace and sparkly outfit.
7. Jennifer Lawrence Is Going Viral For Her Meme Worthy Reaction!
“If I don’t win, I’m leaving,” she said when they announced off the nominees for Best Actress – Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy.
8. Billie Eilish “What Was I Made For?” Wins Best Original Song
The multiple-time Grammy Award winner, Billie Eilish, won the award for Best Original Song at this year’s Golden Globes for “What Was I Made For.” This soulful hit was featured in the iconic film, Barbie. Although Billie seemed surprised by the win, fans say there’s no doubt she deserved to ace the award.
9. Selena Gomez & Taylor Swift Spilling Tea
The two besties were caught catching up and spilling some tea. Reportedly, Selena whispered to Taylor how “i asked for a picture with him and she (kylie jenner) said no” – to which Taylor asked “with timothee?” and then *selena noded*
Though, Selena has now set the record straight on this tabloid on Tuesday. On an E! News Instagram post about the rumor on Tuesday, Gomez set the record straight with a simple comment. “Noooooo I told Taylor about two of my friends who hooked up,” Gomez commented on the post. “Not that that’s anyone business.”
