Umro Ayyar – A New Beginning, a movie potentially set out to be the game changer of films in Pakistan is directed by Azfar Jafri under the production of VR Chili Production. Based on the character of Umro Ayyar, from the classic Urdu novel Dastaan-e-Amir Hamza’s Indo-Persian tales. The novels of Umro Ayyar were full of magic and intrigue for the 90’s kids. Now the legendary classics are being turned into a movie, set to finally release in 2023.

Written by Atif Rehan Siddiqui, the film is produced by Huma Jamil Babar in collaboration with VR Chili Production. Moreover, the impressive ensemble cast features renowned actors such as Usman Mukhtar, Faran Tahir, Sanam Saeed, Ali Kazmi, Adnan Siddiqui, Simi Raheal, Sana Nawaz, Manzar Sehbai, Daniyal Raheal, Salmaan Shaukat, Osama Karamat, Uloomi Karim, Asad Chaudhary, Atif Rehan Siddique, Muhammad Imran, Bilal Jutt, Ruman Ali, Shehroz Sanaullah, and Hamza Ali Abbasi.
At First Glance
At first glance, it’s most definitely everything Pakistani cinema is missing so far. Saas-bahu shenanigans? Girl-boy falling in love but families resisting? What? That’s so yesterday! Umro Ayyar is all about dark mystery, glory of the good vs evil battle, action and transporting you to a land full of dark magic far, far away.
Narrated in Hamza Ali Abbasi’s husky voice, heavily laced with mystique & magic, the teaser sounds an alarm for the beginning of the end. The earth is facing its doom and those living in the darkness are called to wake up to a new sun rising. The time has come for Umro to recognize his powers and fight the good vs evil battle – a captivating battle awaits in a land brewing thick with mystery, darkness, supernatural forces and action.
We see Usman Mukhtar in a possible role of a simple guy leading a simple life – an academic driven to the depths of darkness – but will the amulet he received from Adnan Siddiqui’s character as a child give him the power he needs to win the battle and start a new age for earth?
Expectations From The Venture
The production quality by the looks of it, is definitely above par, the frames can be likened to action combat, mystery thrillers we’ve been watching on OTT platforms, hence the audience anticipation!
On Taking On A Classic
We spoke to audiences who have read the original Umro Ayyar and they were quite clear about not sensing any familiarity with the classic and hence, the narrative seems like quite the modern take. Turns out, the director was right when he said it will be a “very fresh take” on the said classic.

These narratives are precious, cultural gems from our literary heritage embedded with tales and folklores from Muslim lands. We are genuinely pleased to know about the project and are excited to experience the magic and tales of Umro Ayyar brought to the silver screen.
