Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani has created a buzz in B – Town and in lands far, far away. The film stars Alia Bhatt, Ranveer Singh, Dharmendra, Jaya Bachchan and Shabana Azmi in central roles. Karan Johar has pulled out all the stops for his grand release on his 25th anniversary as a director with a star studded cast, iconic Bollywood costumes, exotic locations and larger than life frames with a Bollywood style twist of laughter and tears. We don’t know if it’s just us or the movie is highly indistinguishable to all of Karan Johar’s past hits. Will the ode to his mentors and classic Bollywood romance be enough to bring Bollywood back on track?
The trailer introduces us to Alia and Ranveer engaged in a heated, passionate argument in the middle of the road, a scene highly similar to K Jo’s Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, ever classic Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham and even has similarity to Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Ram Leela. Alia as Rani is level-headed, well educated, comes from a well-educated Bengali family of intellectuals who discuss everything from poetry to politics while Ranveer’s character, Rocky is a flamboyant, flashy desi buffed up dude who is super rich and has a more conventional, stringent family. Their families are two opposites but Rocky and Rani seem to love each other regardless. Alia realizes their families are too different, so before marrying, they decide to ‘switch’ their families to know if their marriage will survive. Jaya Bachchan’s Dhanlakshmi is apparently the villain of Rani and Rocky’s love story, she looks as intimidating as her real self and promises to be quite iconic.
With Rocky Aur Rani, Karan has said to be hoping to pay tribute to his ‘guru’ Yash Chopra who is known as King of Romance in Indian cinema.
“I did go through phases of evolution as a filmmaker. But right during the pandemic, I felt I just needed to make a movie that made me feel like I was 25 again. And when I was 25, the only movie I could think of or make was Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, because it was like an accumulation of all the movies that I had grown up watching. It’s a homage to Raj Kapoor, Yash Chopra, Sooraj Barjatya.”

Our Thoughts On The Trailer
The team at FUCHSIA huddled together minutes before the trailer premiered with our eyes glued to the screen and expectations bubbling. And oh boy, do we have a lot to say. More than half the team agreed the chemistry between Alia and Ranveer was hard to figure out, was it there, was it not?
It was unanimously agreed upon that it wasn’t.
The team was also divided over if Ranveer Singh is too loud and flashy? Could the shirt please be buttoned at some point? But half of us also agree it’s the demand of the character and script. One of our team members did point out: ‘It’s Ranveer Singh as Ranveer Singh”. There’s also the view how both are actually quite perfect for their roles but we cant’ spot much chemistry there?
We believe it’s the very essence that has long been long gone from Bollywood movies and Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani hints at encapsulating love, family dynamics, drama, fun sadness just like the old days. Since there has been much talk about its references to the classics, some thought people shouldn’t have too many expectations because it’s unlikely it will beat the classic big ones.
While some of us believe one shouldn’t be comparing it to the classics to begin with.
Lastly, the concept doesn’t seem to be much different and seems like Bollywood is obsessed with their swapping tales.
