PEMRA’s decision to ban “Hadsa” stemmed from its alleged exploitation of a real-life motorway rape case to create a plot twist within its storyline. However, this is not the first time a drama series has been halted midway in Pakistan. It’s not uncommon for drama and filmmakers in Pakistan to face criticism for allegedly weaving provocative narratives and delving into taboo subjects.
Consequently, we decided to revisit some Pakistani dramas that were previously banned by PEMRA due to their allegedly unsettling narratives and disconcerting scenes.
1. Jalan
Jalan aired in 2020 on Ary Digital. It was written by, directed by Aabis Raza and produced by Moomal Entertainment. The drama featured a talented cast, including Minal Khan, Emmad Irfani, and Areeba Habib in pivotal roles. Minal Khan portrayed the character of Nisha, a woman who becomes entangled in a complex love triangle with her sister’s husband, played by Emmad Irfani, leading to a series of intense and dramatic events.
PEMRA issued a ban on the drama series “Jalan” as some viewers called it out due to its controversial and morally objectionable content. The central theme of the show, which revolved around a love affair between a woman and her sister’s husband, was deemed to be against societal norms and values. The intense portrayal of this taboo relationship and the ensuing conflicts sparked outrage among viewers and various sections of society, leading to calls for its ban.
2. Dil Na Umeed Toh Nahin
Dil Na Umeed To Nahin premiered in 2021 on TV One. It was directed by Kashif Nisar, written by Amna Mufti and produced by Seema Tahir Khan. A project of Kashf Foundation, DNUTN cast included several notable actors such as Yasra Rizvi, Yumna Zaidi, Wahaj Ali, Naumaan Ejaz, Navid Shahzad, Samiya Mumtaz and Omair Rana. The story revolved around critical social issues, particularly child trafficking and exploitation, and aimed to shed light on the harsh realities faced by vulnerable individuals in society.
PEMRA issued a ban on Dil Na Umeed To Nahin due to its depiction of sensitive and distressing subject matter. The drama delved into the dark world of child trafficking, child labor, and sexual exploitation, which were deemed to be distressing and inappropriate for television audiences. While the show’s intention was to raise awareness about these issues, it received criticism for its indepth portrayal of such sensitive topics, with concerns raised about the potential psychological impact on viewers as well the story raising questions as to alleging implicit involvement of law enforcing agencies as aiding & abetting certain activities.
3. Ishqiya
Ishqiya aired in 2020 on ARY Digital. It was directed by Badar Mehmood, written by Mohsin Ali Shah and produced by Big Bang Entertainment. The drama featured a talented ensemble cast, including Feroze Khan, Hania Aamir, Ramsha Khan, and Gohar Rasheed in prominent roles. The story explored complex relationships, betrayal, and the consequences of one’s actions.
PEMRA issued a ban on Ishqiya due to concerns regarding its alleged portrayal of toxic and morally objectionable content. The drama was criticized for depicting characters engaged in morally questionable behavior, extramarital affairs, and the normalization of unhealthy relationships. Some viewers and religious groups argued that the show’s content was contrary to the cultural and societal values upheld in Pakistan.
4. Pyar Ke Sadqay
Pyar Ke Sadqay aired in 2020 on HUM TV. It was directed by Farooq Rind, written by Zanjabeel Asim and produced by Momina Duraid Production. The drama boasted a talented ensemble cast, with Bilal Abbas Khan, Yumna Zaidi, Atiqa Odho, Omair Rana, Srha Asghar and Yashama Gill. The storyline revolved around love, fate, and the complexities of relationships, with a touch of humor and drama.
PEMRA banned Pyar Kay Sadqay in February 2021. The ban was imposed after the show received complaints from viewers who said that it explores themes of disability and sexual assaults faced by the daughter in law, which are sensitive topics in Pakistan. PEMRA may have been concerned that the show would normalize these issues or make them seem more acceptable than they are. The father-in-law in the drama initially was allegedly opposed about Mahjabeen getting married to his stepson because of his wrong intentions towards her.
5. Mere Paas Tum Ho
Mere Paas Tum Ho aired in 2019 on ARY Digital, was created by acclaimed writer Khalil-ur-Rehman Qamar and directed by Nadeem Baig. The drama was produced by Six Sigma Plus. The lead cast featured the immensely talented Humayun Saeed, Ayeza Khan, and Adnan Malik in pivotal roles. The show revolved around complex themes of love, betrayal, and societal norms, exploring the emotional intricacies of relationships and personal integrity. “
PEMRA banned the airing of Mere Paas Tum Ho in January 2020. The ban was imposed after the show received complaints from viewers who said that it was promoting negative values and was not suitable for family viewing. PEMRA also stated that the show was distorting the social fabric of Pakistan. The ban was met with mixed reactions from the public. Some people supported the ban, saying that the show was harmful to society. Others criticized the ban, saying that it was an infringement on freedom of expression.
