Chlorophyll Water: Is It Tiktok’s New Health Elixir? 5 Green Benefits!

Little did we know, chlorophyll isn’t just considered a supposed health treasure, it has also garnered immense popularity as a TikTok trend, amassing a staggering 593 million views. But does it truly offer unmissable health benefits? We’ve all heard doctors and our mothers incessantly convince us of the virtues of consuming leafy greens, but often, we struggle to find the time, develop a taste for them, discover recipes enticing enough or simply have no desire to become dedicated herbivores. In the case(s) above, could sipping our greens be a better option? This trend has led many to explore this unconventional path. However, let’s first unravel the mystery surrounding chlorophyll.

Chlorophyll is the green pigment responsible for plants green colour, it is the green pigment plants use to make food during a process called photosynthesis – a process by which plants convert sunlight into energy. (Did you even study science back in school if you missed this?) It is extremely potent and is found abundantly in leafy green vegetables like spinach, kale, wheatgrass, spirulina and parsley. While you don’t necessarily need supplements to incorporate chlorophyll into your diet; simply indulging in green fruits and vegetables should suffice. But in the case that you decide to try it as a supplement, you will likely come across chlorophyllin. This water-soluble form of chlorophyll either in the form of liquid or tablets contains additional copper and sodium, added to enhance your body’s absorption of this valuable substance.

We know what it does it to plants but curious to know what it can do for humans? Here are 6 benefits according to researches:

1. Might Just Might Do Wonders For Your Skin

A super anti oxidant, high in vitamins C,A,E and K, it can help fight free radicals that occur when the skin is damaged or breaking down. So there are chances if you have inflammatory acne that is red and inflamed, drinking chlorophyll water could help but not remember its not magic, specially in the case of deep, cystic acne. Some researchers found, through either consuming or applying chlorophyll topically provides the skin with anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties, helps treat acne, minimizes appearance of pores, and improves signs of aging. Although, as of 2023, enough research is limited.

2. Might Help Heal Wounds

Research has indicated that chlorophyllin may limit bacterial growth and inflammation in skin wounds, which can speed the healing process and lower the risk of infection. Chlorophyll may also be beneficial in the treatment of burns and ulcers by promoting the growth of new tissue. It also significantly reduces pain when added together with other Wound management and prevention substances. Another research in 2021 supports the above theory, a study published in Dermatology showed how adding chlorophyll from micro algae helped stimulate skin regeneration without any harmful side effects.

3. May Combat Anemia

If you dont consume animal protein enough in your diet and are a vegan, you may be at risk of anemia but fear not, you may be able to combat it by consuming more dark, leafy greens or taking a liquid chlorophyll supplement.

Red blood cells contain a molecule known as hemoglobin, which has a similar chemical composition to chlorophyll. Thanks to this similarity, chlorophyll might be a treatment option for individuals with hemoglobin deficiencies, such as those suffering from anemia. In a study conducted in 2016, where a specific type of chlorophyll was used to address anemia, it was discovered that the use of chlorophyll could potentially alleviate the symptoms of anemia. Another study suggests that beverages derived from grasses rich in chlorophyll could potentially serve as a treatment for hemoglobin deficiencies. This potential effectiveness is attributed to chlorophyll’s antioxidant properties and its molecular structure, which closely resembles that of red blood cells.

4. Helps With Liver Detoxification

Chlorophyll has been shown to improve the liver’s natural ability to remove toxins and waste from the body, in a process known as detoxification. In a study conducted in the past, when chlorophyllin, a copper/sodium salt combined with chlorophyll, was found to fight against liver damage and potentially liver cancer by making the detoxification process more effective.

5. Chlorophyll May Increase Energy

Taking chlorophyll may enhance energy levels due to the ability to produce red blood cells. These red blood cells are responsible for carrying the oxygen necessary for energy production and optimal cellular function throughout the body. As the levels of circulating oxygen increase, energy levels improve, leading to better physical stamina.

Possible Reactions & Side Effects

While chlorophyll is generally safe, it’s important to follow the recommended dosage. Please consult your health care provider to know what would be a safe amount for you. Its possible some people may experience a mild stomach upset or nausea, and diarrhea, especially if they take large amounts. In rare cases, some people may experience an allergic reaction to liquid chlorophyll, including symptoms such as rash, itching, or difficulty breathing, thus it is important to stop taking the supplement and speak with a healthcare professional.

It might also be possible that pro longed consumption of the supplement can lead to photosensitisation, which is when your skin becomes more sensitive when exposed to sunlight. If you’re pregnant or breastfeeding, consult a healthcare provider before taking liquid chlorophyll.
