“Barzakh” explores fundamental questions such as what it means to be human, the nature of the soul and whether it continues after death, and how to find hope and joy in a state of perpetual uncertainty.

The series “Barzakh,” featuring renowned Pakistani actors Fawad Khan and Sanam Saeed, is set to premiere on the streaming platform ZEE5 Global. The six-episode series, produced by Waqas Hassan and Shailja Kejriwal for Zindagi, is directed by Asim Abbasi, who previously directed Zindagi’s first Pakistani original “Churails” and the film “Cake,” Pakistan’s submission for the 2019 Oscars.
“Barzakh” is set in the stunning Hunza Valley, with cinematography by Mo Azmi. The story follows a 76-year-old recluse who invites his estranged family to his remote valley resort for an unusual event—his wedding to the ghost of his first love. This event leads to deep reflections on life’s mysteries, the afterlife, and the enduring power of love. The series delves into themes such as mental health, postpartum depression, generational trauma, and gender inclusivity, while also exploring the significance of folklore in human experience.
In the series, Fawad Khan will be seen playing the role of a single parent, charming but ridden with guilt for what he has lost. Sanam Saeed plays the central female character in the show.
Barzakh marks Fawad Khan and Sanam Saeed’s reunion after 10 years, after their popular show Zindagi Gulzar Hai.
Producer Shailja Kejriwal Explained The Concept Behind Story.
This series was conceptualized during the pandemic when all pre-defined notions of love, life, death and beyond were going through a seismic shift. Online work, mourning and celebrations had led to a sort of haze and confusion about what was real. Here lay the genesis of the show which is essentially a family reunion, where the living and the dead are all invited. Set in the Hunza valley with its myths and legends, Asim Abbasi’s quirky, funny, deeply philosophical and layered writing, a dollop of magic realism and bringing Fawad Khan back…all added up to a show that needed to be made.
Shailja Kejriwal
Director Asim Abbasi expressed that he hopes viewers of “Barzakh” gain a deeper understanding of relationships and humanity. He wants the audience to recognize that our current life is merely a small part of a much larger existence and that the lives of those we’ve lost continue to have significance.
