All hail the new Pakistani legend! Arshad Nadeem has just etched his name in Olympic history with an epic 92.97-meter throw at the Paris Olympics 2024. His jaw-dropping performance not only smashes the previous Olympic record but also secures Pakistan’s first gold medal in 32 years!

Arshad Nadeem, Gold Medal, Olympics 2024, Paris

In a country where cricket often feels like the heartbeat of our national spirit, it’s easy to overlook other sports. I’ll confess, I was as clueless about javelin as anyone—sitting in front of the TV, frantically Googling the rules to understand how a winner is decided. Our obsession with cricket has often overshadowed other athletic pursuits, and recent heartbreaks on the cricket field have left us searching for a beacon of hope.

And then, Arshad Nadeem happened. With his awe-inspiring 92.97-meter throw at the Paris Olympics, he clinched gold and captured our hearts. For a moment, the entire nation—cricket fans and non-sports enthusiasts alike—came together, cheering for Arshad with a fervor usually reserved for the cricket pitch. As Pakistanis, we united in a way we seldom do over other sports. Even those rarely following sports were texting, cheering, and hoping for Arshad’s gold medal win. And win he did, bringing us a story of triumph and national pride that we so dearly needed.

But Arshad’s journey isn’t just about an Olympic record; it’s about the perseverance, hard work, and sheer determination that can inspire us all. It’s a reminder that greatness can emerge from anywhere and that our collective support can achieve incredible things. So, take a moment to scroll down and delve into Arshad’s inspiring story—it’s one we can all learn from and celebrate.

Humble Beginnings

Arshad Nadeem was born on January 2, 1997, in a modest village near Mian Channu in southern Punjab, about 300 kilometers southwest of Lahore. Growing up as the third of seven siblings, Nadeem’s family faced significant financial challenges. His father, Muhammad Ashraf, a retired construction worker, was the family’s only provider.

His older brother, Shahid Azeem, 32, shared that their family’s meals were often quite sparse. They would be fortunate to have meat only once a year during Eid al-Adha. “It was a rare treat for us if we had anything more than lentils or vegetables,” Shahid recalled in an interview with Al Jazeera.

Cricket Was His First Love!

Nadeem’s interest in sports began when he watched his older brother Shahid compete in regional track and field events. He immersed himself in a range of sports, including football, hockey, badminton, kabaddi, and cricket, Pakistan’s most popular sport.

Cricket quickly became Nadeem’s passion. He excelled as a bowler, participating in numerous tournaments and gaining recognition in his village for his impressive skills. Many believed that if he had continued with cricket, he could have matched the speed of Shoaib Akhtar, one of Pakistan’s fastest bowlers.

However, despite his talent, Nadeem faced discouragement from his father and two older brothers, who were not supportive of his cricket ambitions.

The Scout Who Saw Greatness

In 2011, Rasheed Ahmed Saqi, a hotelier and resident of Mian Channu who scouted and invested in athletic talent, observed Nadeem at a local competition he had organized. Saqi, a former provincial track and field competitor with experience in javelin throw, was struck by Nadeem’s impressive performance in javelin and shot put. He noticed the young athlete’s strength and agility and decided that with proper training and support, Nadeem could achieve great things in the sport.

From Local Trials to National Champion

During WAPDA’s trials for its sports department, Rasheed Saqi arranged for Nadeem to compete. At the trials, Nadeem impressed everyone with a 56-meter (184-foot) throw. Within just two months of joining WAPDA at age 18, he won the national championship in 2015.

In a dramatic final, with just one throw left and ranked fifth, Nadeem managed an impressive 70 meters (230 feet) on his last attempt, clinching the gold medal. His performance earned him a spot in the 2016 South Asian Games in Guwahati, India, where he competed against the rising star Neeraj Chopra. Despite a minor elbow injury, Nadeem delivered a throw of 78.33 meters.

Shattering Records

Nadeem made history by becoming the first South Asian and only the second Asian man to throw over 90 meters in javelin. Out of just 24 male athletes who have achieved this feat, he has distinguished himself further. Previously, he was a nine-time international medallist and four-time gold winner. After finishing fifth at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, Nadeem has now earned his place as an Olympic champion.

In the world of sports, the journey to success is rarely a solitary one. It’s a path paved with not just talent and hard work, but also with the essential support from our nation. Yet, for many of our athletes, including javelin star Arshad Nadeem, this support often falls short. When athletes have to cover part of their travel expenses, it’s not just a logistical issue—it’s a reminder of the gaps in our commitment to them.

The contributions from organizations like the Athletics Federation of Pakistan and the Pakistan Sports Board are certainly commendable. However, the reality is that they often fall short of what is needed to truly elevate our athletes to their highest potential. It’s not just about funding travel; it’s about providing a robust framework that supports every aspect of an athlete’s journey. This includes investing in state-of-the-art training facilities, ensuring access to the best coaching, and offering comprehensive financial support that removes the burden of self-funding.

Imagine the impact of a system where athletes can focus solely on their training and competition without the stress of financial constraints. Quality facilities can significantly enhance performance by offering athletes the resources they need to train effectively. Adequate investment can ensure that athletes are not only competing but also training in environments that push their limits and prepare them for international success.

By providing comprehensive support, we can ensure that our athletes are not only competing but thriving. We have the talent; what we need is the commitment to match it. Supporting our athletes fully means investing in their futures, creating opportunities for success, and inspiring the next generation to reach for greatness. It’s time we recognize that their victories are our victories, and their struggles should be met with our support.

As we celebrate Arshad Nadeem’s remarkable achievements, it’s important to recognize the magnitude of his journey. His triumphs are not just personal victories but a testament to what can be achieved with dedication, perseverance, and a little support. Arshad has shown us that with the right backing, dreams can be turned into reality and obstacles can be overcome.

His story is a powerful reminder of the potential within every athlete waiting for a chance to shine. Let’s honor Arshad’s incredible achievements by committing ourselves to fully supporting our athletes. It’s time to ensure that every aspiring champion receives the encouragement and resources they need to reach their fullest potential.

Congratulations, Arshad Nadeem—your success has not only brought glory to Pakistan but has also inspired countless others to dream big and push beyond limits. As Nelson Mandela once said, “It always seems impossible until it’s done.” You have shown us that the impossible is indeed possible.
