Amid the chaotic start of Karachi’s academic session, the glaring shortage of essential academic books is sparking widespread concern among students and parents. As crucial learning resources remain out of reach, the educational future of millions hangs in the balance.

The Crucial Role Of Academic Books And The Impact Of Their Delay
The Crucial Role Of Academic Books And The Impact Of Their Delay

As Karachi’s academic session begins with an unexpected delay of over two and a half months, students and parents find themselves in a dire situation—a significant shortage of textbooks that threatens to derail the educational progress of millions. Academic books are the cornerstone of a student’s learning journey, serving as essential tools that guide them through complex subjects and prepare them for exams. With the academic calendar already truncated, the timely availability of these resources becomes even more critical.

Students are under immense pressure, as they must cover the entire syllabus in a condensed timeframe. The lack of textbooks is exacerbating this stress, leaving them with little time to grasp key concepts before exams. This shortage is not just a minor inconvenience; it is creating widespread anxiety among students and parents alike, as they scramble to find the necessary materials to keep up with the curriculum.

A Pressing Issue: The Extent Of The Textbook Shortage

In a recent press conference held in the heart of Karachi’s book-selling district, the Urdu Bazaar Traders Association shed light on the severity of the situation. Key officials, including Sajid Yousuf, Hussain Abbas, Ali Muhammad Awan, Nadeem Akhtar, and Farhan Kaghzi, revealed that an alarming 30% to 40% of textbooks are missing from the market. This shortage spans multiple grades, affecting subjects crucial for students’ academic success.

Particularly concerning is the absence of critical textbooks, such as 10th-grade mathematics, 5th-grade Urdu, and chemistry and physics books for grades 9 to 12. Even more troubling is the six-month unavailability of computer science books for grades 9 and 10, and the complete absence of biology textbooks for grades 11 and 12. The lack of these essential resources leaves students unable to properly prepare for exams, putting their academic futures at serious risk.

The Financial Burden On Families

Adding to the woes of students and parents is the recent imposition of an 18% to 20% tax on stationery items following the budget. This tax hike, coupled with the scarcity of textbooks, is placing a substantial financial strain on families. Hussain Abbas, General Secretary of the Urdu Bazaar Traders Association, highlighted the compounded difficulties parents face as they struggle to afford basic educational materials for their children. Parents, already burdened by rising costs, are now making repeated trips to Urdu Bazaar, only to return empty-handed. The frustration and desperation are palpable, as families find themselves caught in a cycle of searching for books that simply aren’t available. Thus, this situation is not just an inconvenience, it’s a potential academic crisis that could have long-term consequences for students across Karachi.

Criticism Of The Sindh Textbook Board And Publishers

The traders did not mince words in their criticism of the Sindh Textbook Board and publishers, whom they accuse of “incompetence and greed.” Sajid Yousuf, Chairman of the Urdu Bazaar Traders Association Sindh, noted that over 15 million students are enrolled in private and public educational institutions across the province. The delayed start of the academic year, now beginning in August instead of the traditional April, has only worsened the situation, with delays in textbook printing cited as a significant contributing factor.

This is not an isolated incident. Yousuf pointed out that last year, similar delays in textbook publications led to students failing their intermediate exams—a consequence that could have been avoided with better management and timely action from the authorities. Hence, the repeated failures of the Sindh Textbook Board and publishers to meet their obligations are putting the educational futures of millions of students in jeopardy.

Calls For Immediate Action And Long-Term Solutions

In response to this crisis, the Urdu Bazaar Traders Association is calling for immediate intervention. Farhan Kaghzi, a prominent member of the association, emphasized the need for prompt action to ensure that students have access to the textbooks they need. He proposed that the academic year should start on April 1, as originally intended, rather than being pushed to August. Moreover, Kaghzi urged that the printing of next year’s textbooks should begin immediately to prevent similar shortages in the future. To address the issue of monopolization, Kaghzi suggested that the contract for printing textbooks should not be awarded to a single publisher. Instead, limiting each publisher to 20,000 copies would allow multiple publishers to contribute, reducing the risk of shortages and ensuring that textbooks are widely available across the city.

The Government’s Role And Responsibility

The ongoing textbook shortage is not just an educational issue—it is a matter of governance. The government’s failure to take decisive action in the face of this crisis reflects a lack of responsibility and accountability. With millions of students’ educational outcomes at stake, the government must step in to resolve the situation promptly. The traders’ association’s call for the formation of a committee to address these issues underscores the urgency of the situation. Without immediate and effective government intervention, the education of millions of students in Sindh could be compromised, leaving an irreplaceable void in their academic and professional futures. Thus, it is high time the government takes a stand, ensuring that such a crisis does not repeat in the future, and that the students of Karachi receive the education they deserve.
