With Arshad Nadeem’s historic Olympic victory fresh in our minds, it’s a great time to remember that while cricket will always hold a special place in our hearts, Pakistan is bursting with talent across a range of sports. As we celebrate Independence Day, let’s shift our focus and shine a spotlight on the 14 incredible achievements of Pakistani athletes who’ve made us proud beyond the cricket field.

1. Shahbaz Ahmed

Shahbaz Ahmed led Pakistan to victory in the 1994 World Cup held in Sydney, marking the country’s last major triumph in hockey. His performance in the final against the Netherlands is often hailed as one of the finest displays of dribbling, body maneuvers, ball control, and stick work in the sport’s history. Known as the ‘Maradona of hockey’ for his extraordinary skills, Shahbaz’s game mastery included breathtaking runs, precise passes, and exceptional ball control.

From 1990 to 1994, he was arguably the best player in hockey, earning Man of the Tournament awards in both the 1990 and 1994 World Cups. His impact was also significant at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, where Pakistan secured a bronze medal. During his career, Shahbaz was instrumental in Pakistan’s dominance at the regional level, with key victories in the 1990 Asian Games and the 1989 Asia Cup, often overshadowing their rivals, India.

2. Ayesha Ayaz

At just 12 years old, Ayesha Ayaz made history as Pakistan’s youngest taekwondo athlete to compete internationally. Her remarkable debut came at the seventh Fujairah Taekwondo Open Championship in the UAE, where she clinched a bronze medal. Ayesha’s impressive performance continued at the International Taekwondo Championship in Bangkok, Thailand, where she won one silver and two bronze medals in the Under-12 category. Competing in the 42kg class, she outperformed athletes from three countries, standing out among over 2,200 participants from 40 nations. Her exceptional skills and determination have quickly established her as one of Pakistan’s most promising young stars in taekwondo.

3. Arslan Ash

Pakistani Tekken prodigy Arslan Ash has secured the Tekken 8 EVO 2024 title, marking his fifth championship win. In the grand finals held in Las Vegas, Arslan Ash defeated his fellow countryman, Atif Butt, with a score of 3-1. After losing to Arslan in the winner’s final, Atif Butt overcame Japanese competitor Nobi 3-0 in the loser’s final to advance to the grand finals. Arslan’s triumph solidifies his reputation as one of the greatest Tekken players of all time, continuing his impressive run from victories at Tekken EVO 2023 and EVO Japan. His achievements underscore the growing prominence of the Pakistani fighting game community on the international stage.

4. Pakistan Rowing Team

The Pakistani rowing team earned second place at the 63rd Grand Moscow Regatta, held from May 30 to June 2 on the Moscow Rowing Canal. The team, comprising Manahil Hussain, Aaleen Hussain, Mariam Yousuf Ali, and Nehan Asad, showcased their skill and teamwork in this prestigious event, representing Pakistan with distinction in the Russian capital.

5. Azra Farooq

Azra Farooq, a standout volleyball player from Pakistan, has been honored as the Most Valuable Player (MVP) at the Kings Cup Volleyball tournament in the Maldives. Competing for MK Club, Azra’s exceptional performance was a key factor in her team’s success. She played a crucial role in winning all four of her team’s matches and was named the best player in each game. Her remarkable contributions were pivotal in securing the tournament title for MK Club.

6. Kashmala Talat & Gulfam Joseph

Pakistani shooters made a strong showing at the Thailand Shooting Championship in Bangkok, winning a gold and a silver medal. Kashmala Talat led the charge in the women’s 25m pistol event, clinching the gold with a score of 575. Gulfam Joseph also shone in the 10m air pistol event, securing a silver medal with his precise shooting.

7. Maria Khan

Dammam-based Eastern Flames announced the signing of Maria Khan, captain of Pakistan’s women’s football team, for the upcoming season of the Saudi Women’s Premier League. Maria Khan will be the first Pakistani player to join the league, a milestone achieved after her standout performances for Pakistan in the Four-Nations Cup held in the kingdom last year.

8. Ali Bhola

Pakistan’s young wrestler Hasan Ali Bhola clinched a gold medal at the Children’s Asian Games in Yakutsk, Russia. As the only Pakistani wrestler in the competition, Bhola showcased his remarkable skills by defeating opponents from Azerbaijan, Tajikistan, and Mongolia to reach the final. In the championship match, he triumphed over two Kyrgyz wrestlers with a decisive 8-2 victory.

9. Amir Khan

Amir Khan, a 22-year-old athlete from Swat, has made Pakistan proud by securing a gold medal at the World Taekwondo Championships in Thailand. The competition featured over 3,000 athletes from 30 countries, including Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, the Philippines, China, Indonesia, and Malaysia.

10. Junior Squash Team

The recent triumph of Pakistani squash players at the Australia Junior Squash Championship 2024 has reignited hopes and promises a resurgence in a sport that once held national pride. The championship showcased a dominant performance by Pakistani athletes, culminating in several notable victories. Mahnoor Ali and Mehwish Ali shone brightly, each securing gold medals in their respective categories. At just 11 years old, Mahnoor Ali has already earned 11 gold medals, including prestigious titles such as the Asian Junior Gold Medal and Scottish Junior Open Gold Medal. Meanwhile, 15-year-old Mehwish Ali boasts 21 gold medals and a series of championships. Their impressive achievements not only bring honor to Pakistan but also inspire future generations of squash players across the country.

Additionally, other Pakistani athletes also excelled on the international stage. Huzaifa Shahid won in the Boys U-13 category, and Ibrahim Zeb triumphed in the Boys U-17, highlighting the exceptional talent and sportsmanship of Pakistani players and earning admiration from spectators around the world.

11. Sehar & Veronika Sohail

Pakistani weightlifters Sehar Sohail and Veronika Sohail have made history by winning gold medals at the Weightlifting Championship currently taking place in Potchefstroom, South Africa. Competing in the 52 kg and 57 kg categories respectively, the sisters excelled in the squat, bench press, deadlift, and overall weightlifting events. Their outstanding performances have not only earned them top honors but also significantly boosted Pakistan’s reputation in the sport.

12. Rashid Naseem

Pakistani martial artist Muhammad Rashid Naseem has achieved a new Guinness World Record by crushing 39 cans with his head in just 30 seconds. Naseem, who started his record-breaking journey in 2013 by removing 40 bottle caps in one minute, has since amassed numerous Guinness World Records. As noted on his Facebook profile, he now holds an impressive 101 records, making him the only Pakistani to surpass the 100-record milestone. His remarkable feats include the most cans crushed with the head in one minute, the most walnuts crushed by hand in one minute, and the most watermelons crushed with the head in 30 seconds.

13. Meheq Khokhar

Meheq Khokhar is a distinguished Pakistani female tennis player who has made a significant impact on both national and international tennis. Her journey began at the age of 12 when she was selected as an international representative for Pakistan. By the time she was 15 and 16, she had already made waves by winning matches in professional international tournaments, showcasing her potential as a rising star.

Awarded a prestigious tennis scholarship, Khokhar pursued her studies at a Division 1 university in the USA, where she excelled as both a student and athlete. On the national level, she has earned gold and silver medals at the National Games in 2019 and 2023, respectively, further cementing her place in Pakistani tennis.

Khokhar has also been a key player for the national team, participating in major events like the Billie Jean King Cup, the Asian Games, and the Junior Billie Jean King Cup Islamic Games in 2017. In July 2023, she played a pivotal role in the Billie Jean King Cup in Malaysia, leading her team to victories over Guam and Turkmenistan. She also secured the All-Pakistan National Singles and Doubles titles, won back-to-back National Singles titles, and clinched the 7th Memorial Women’s National Singles Championship.

14. Arshad Nadeem

Last but not least, Pakistan’s latest champion, javelin thrower Arshad Nadeem, made history at the Paris Summer Olympics on August 9, 2024. Nadeem secured Pakistan’s first-ever Olympic track and field win, marking the country’s first gold medal in 40 years. The 27-year-old athlete from Mian Channu, Punjab, set a new Olympic record with a throw of 92.97 meters on his second attempt in the men’s javelin final. This remarkable performance surpassed the previous record of 90.57 meters set by Andreas Thorkildsen of Norway at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
