In a day and age when society moves towards women empowerment, Dr. Zakir Naik, an Islamic public orator wants single women to not be let loose on society, lest they become ‘public property’ or, as he terms in Urdu ‘Bazaari Aurat’.

In a day and age where women are leading governance, forging ahead in the fields of tech, medicine, military, entertainment, aeronautics and more (the sky is the limit), Dr. Zakir Naik cannot see them beyond the scope of a limited existence – being recognized as the wife of Mr. XYZ.

In a day and age where men are finding it hard to make ends meet and balance a single income family where expenses are rising, the cost of bringing up, educating and sustaining a single family unit is tough for a man, Dr. Zakir Naik wants the same man to marry again, for a second time, so that he can make life tougher for himself and for all those who are part of his growing family unit.

In a day and age where single women are living independently, paying the bills, and even supporting their husbands if they are jobless, or an entire family unit, (including in-laws) at times, Dr. Zakir Naik believes that a woman will become public property if she is not married to a man.
So let me ask you one question Doctor. Who will label that single woman as a ‘Bazaari Aurat’? Is it the men around us, the ones who already have a wife and happy to take on a second? Are all single working women public property? Do they all need a man to allow them to follow a decent lifestyle? Are all women living, surviving, earning, thriving on their own in society considered an opportunity for a man seeking a second wife?
Why not just let women be? If they have chosen to, or by chance, remain single, the constitution of Pakistan allows them that right. Perhaps the same constitution also needs to set out a law on those who call single women ‘Bazaari Aurat’ or public property – hate speech is a real thing.
So, just let women be. And perhaps focus on why a man needs to label any woman a ‘Bazaari Aurat’? That’s the problem you need to solve. Take our advice, be the example, begin with yourself…
