Aamir Khan disclosed he almost quit acting. Shocking, right? Let’s explore why he is a star to be reckoned with and why an exit strategy will be a great loss for his fans, and the entertainment industry at large..

Aamir khan

Aamir Khan is known as the ‘Mr. Perfectionist’ of Bollywood. Throughout the years, he’s made a legacy for himself, in terms of changing the narrative and the landscape on cinema. Audiences from all walks of life, are able to resonate with him.

Recently, the Lagaan actor revealed that he almost quit acting; shocking his fans worldwide. We’re all internally praying he never thinks of this again because we simply cannot imagine Bollywood without him.

From, Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak, to most if not all of his projects, Aamir’s movies are more than what meets the eye. They are though-provoking and well chalked-out. From the plot to the character development, and every minor detail in between, everything embodies precision and perfection. This has a strong impact on the audience. The following are five of his standout movies which are set apart from the rest, leading to us exploring the ‘why’ factor – why would you want to leave when the going is so good?

1. Taare Zameen Par: 2007

We can’t watch the movie without grabbing a box of tissues. The movie explores the theme of children and parenting, especially those with some sort of learning disabilities. Through Ishaan Awasthi, Aamir tackles the topic of dyslexia and children who feel like they don’t belong because of their differences. The movie felt like a warm hug for some, while others realized their mistakes, mostly as parents. Taare Zameen Par evokes compassion and understanding for children with such disabilities among the audience. It makes us realize how our words can have adverse affects, and how each individual is unique in their own special way.

Aamir was the first to shine the spotlight on a topic that was rarely if at all highlighted in mainstream cinema at the time. The movie stands as a memorable narrative that tugs at the heartstrings with a story that embodies guilt, regret and finally, hands out a beautiful lesson for everyone watching.

2. 3 Idiots: 2009

Can it be said that 3 Idiots is a sort of satire of the education system? In our opinion, yes.

We see that Aamir, who plays Rancho, is a genius, who tried to challenge and question the educational system and institute in every way possible. It explores mental health, academic stress, college friendships, parental pressures on children and growing up challenges. Example includes Ali Fazal’s avatar. Characters such as Farhan and Raju are relatable to many too. The movie, in a way, proves how everyone is a part of the rat race, but in a very clever way blends these heavy topics with humor, which seems natural and suitable for audiences of all ages.

Aamir Khan has made sure that his presence in the movie elevated the watch from to epic levels. 3 idiots is a movie that has spanned generations because of its relatability with both young and old audiences. There is the college days charm, the nostalgia and also, the moments when we acknowledge the pain and dream for a better future for our children. In all his narratives, Aamir has always picked heavy themes to play with, yet, with an uplifting message towards the end, laced with humour and poignancy at the same time – a fine juggling act that he has mastered to perfection.

There is no other star who has managed to repeatedly churn out message-driven stories with mass appeal – Aamir Khan has perfected the art.

3. Secret Superstar: 2017

Secret Superstar, through the character of Insia Malik, explores the themes of women empowerment. Aamir as Shakti Kumar plays a music director who supports Insia, encouraging her to follow her passion for singing, despite strict conditions from her father. It explores how a patriarchal society can lead to many challenges for women, such as restrictions, domestic abuse. Women who are unfortunately subjected to all this are able to resonate, but the movie gives a hope and courage to break the cycle.

Again, Secret Superstar is a movie that touches upon a youth-sensitive topic with domestic abuse at its heart. The movie has touched upon all the moments with sensitivity and a purity that shines through. Not just that, but Aamir has made sure that he doesn’t not take centre-stage in this narrative, allowing the key players to shine through while he supports the cause. Again, this one’s a gem to watch and how could we have watched this without Aamir Khan handing out a super believable, entertaining performance.

4. PK: 2014

In PK, as an alien on Earth, Aamir Khan questions societal norms, has a very strong take on religious sentiments and practices. He emphasizes that how, as humans, we are always in search for answers, whether is about seeking our true self, how and why war divides. It ignites, in the viewers, a sense of unity, love and compassion for one another. It also explores the topic of manipulation, in terms of certain religious practices.

This narrative is fresh, and takes on topics which many can resonate with. It is applicable to the world we live in today. Take a look around. You’ll understand.

PK ripped through cinema screens like a new-age sci-fi film, ready to shift the way stories are told. Aamir’s performances refrain from the preachy and border on unhinged character who delivers life truths in a blatantly unassuming manner, almost bordering on the insane. Yet it is this very insanity and the execution of which grips his viewers and gets them to sit up and listen. PK was just that, a one-off version of what the world would be if one pure-hearted person decided to talk his heart out without fear of consequences.

5. Fanaa: 2006

Fanaa, a movie one falls in love with instantly. It revolves around love, sacrifice and betrayal with an eerie political backdrop shaping the narrative.

Rehan, played by Aamir Khan, is a character with many layers. He’s conflicted, has political differences and turmoil. The movie explores human emotions, and in non-traditional and unconventional way explores the seven stages of love. The movie’s changing narratives, play with the audience’s minds, challenging the thought process and perception.

Aamir Khan has redefined stardom, the scope of cinema and has come up with a new concept with every role. Although his movies come after a hiatus, each work is a piece of art, completely original and refined. We can see him after a break but cannot fathom imagining him completely off the cinematic grid.

We all have his children to thank for convincing him to not break away from a career that has given us countless priceless moments onscreen keeping him going.

So keep going Aamir Khan, there’s lots more where that came from – Sitaare Zameen Par up next!
