The tragic case of seven-year-old Mohammed Sarim, who had been missing since January 7, ended in devastation when his body was discovered in the underground water tank of a residential complex near his North Karachi home. Police investigations and initial medical reports revealed that Sarim had been raped, tortured, and murdered.
A Timeline of the Case
Sarim had reportedly gone missing after attending lessons at a local madrassah. His family received a ransom call for his release, prompting a large-scale search operation. Despite the involvement of law enforcement and community members, Sarim remained untraceable for 11 days. On January 18, the search culminated in the discovery of his body inside a water tank at Anam Apartments in New Karachi. Police revealed that earlier searches of the tank, conducted when it was filled with water, had yielded no results. However, after the water supply to the building was disrupted, the plumber noted a foul smell emanating from the tank. Upon inspection, Sarim’s body was found floating.
Autopsy and Evidence
The body was transported to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital (ASH) for an autopsy. Police surgeon Dr. Summaiya Syed confirmed the presence of multiple injuries on the body, particularly around the neck, indicating that the death was not accidental. Further analysis of the injuries revealed evidence of sexual abuse and strangulation. The medical report detailed severe trauma, with the victim’s neck bone broken and visible signs of torture. Initial findings suggested that Sarim had been held captive for several days before being murdered and his body dumped in the tank.
Investigation and Arrests
The Anti-Violent Crime Cell (AVCC) led the investigation, detaining two individuals connected to the incident. According to authorities, the suspects had access to a locked flat in the apartment complex. Evidence collected from the flat, including a blanket and other samples, was sent for forensic analysis. SSP Anil Haider confirmed that Sarim was subjected to rape and torture before being strangled to death. The findings indicated that the murder occurred five days prior to the discovery of his body, suggesting he was alive for several days after being kidnapped.
According to Sahil’s Six Months Cruel Numbers report, a total of 1,630 cases of child abuse were documented across Pakistan in the first half of 2024. Among these, 862 cases involved child sexual abuse, 668 were abduction cases, 82 children were reported missing, and 18 cases of child marriages were recorded. Disturbingly, 48 incidents of pornography following sexual abuse were also reported during this period.
The data further revealed that girls accounted for 59% (962) of the victims, while boys made up 41% (668) of the reported cases, highlighting the gendered nature of child abuse in the country.
Child abuse remains one of the darkest and most ignored realities of our society, as highlighted by the Six Months Cruel Numbers report. These aren’t just isolated tragedies; they are part of a pattern shaped by neglect, silence, and an alarming absence of accountability. Every story of abuse reflects a collective failure to create safe spaces for our children—a failure rooted in societal complacency and outdated mindsets.
