Meri Tanhai – Is Khizer cheating on Maleeha or plain confused?

Meri Tanhai presents an interesting yet very true-to-life version of how a sane and responsible person like Khizer ends up hiding his engagement from the girl he is now feeling attracted to and lies to his fiancé about meeting that girl. To top it all, he very cleverly justifies his wrongdoings both to himself and to Maleeha. Looks like they are both delulu.
Maleeha’s Wakeup Call
Should Maleeha not have been angry at Khizer for not only lying to her but also not returning her call sooner. In fact, from what it seemed like, he called her the next day. It was so irritating to see how cleverly Khizer covered up and justified everything so well that even we as audiences, seemed to think: “not bad, what he is saying makes some sense.”
That is how love blinds you and makes you believe even without questioning the other, or compromise on relationship basics. How can it be okay for someone to lie to their fiancé just because she will ask questions, and they do not want to deal with that now. This justification is in fact, gaslighting the other person, saying: “Oh, I lied because you would have made a fuss.”
We feel for Maleeha but clearly do not have sympathy for her. We are hoping Maleeha’s sensibilities will kick in sooner rather than later.
Ali’s Backstory
We are curious to find out what happened with Ali; how was he forced to leave his wife and daughter in London and return to Pakistan without them. How come he is not in contact with them?
Watching Maleeha all dressed up on Eid made Ali remember his own daughter and then the drama showed us more of his life in flashback.
The Questions We Have
Certain things in Meri Tanhai do not make sense – Why did Ali not inform his parents about his wedding and then the birth of his daughter. Why did Ali’s wife not inquire about his family or express curiosity about not being introduced to them, at least over the phone? It is evident that Mariam and Khizer share a mutual attraction. But which bubble is Khizer living in or how he plans to manage everything, is beyond our understanding. Are we going to see a protagonist that has very dark shades of grey?
Ali may have to choose between his daughter’s and his beloved niece Maleeha’s happiness in future.
