In Gaza, truth has always come at a cost, but for Anas Al Sharif, it was a price he never hesitated to pay. A prominent Al Jazeera journalist and one of the strip’s most fearless voices, he documented the war’s devastation, the hunger crisis, and the relentless toll on civilians with a clarity that cut through propaganda.

In a pre-recorded message to be shared in the event of his death, Al Sharif left words that now feel unbearably heavy:

“I never hesitated to convey the truth as it is, without distortion or misrepresentation, hoping that God would witness those who remained silent.”

The Strike That Took His Life

On August 11, 2025, Al Sharif was killed in an Israeli airstrike near Al Shifa Hospital in Gaza City. He was 28. Four of his Al Jazeera colleagues, Mohammed Qreiqeh, Ibrahim Zaher, Mohammed Noufal, and an assistant, were killed alongside him, as well as freelance reporter Mohammad Al-Khaldi.

Israel alleged that Al Sharif was linked to Hamas and headed a militant cell, accusations he had publicly denied in life and which press freedom groups and the United Nations said were unsupported by evidence. Al Jazeera condemned the strike as a “desperate attempt to silence voices in anticipation of the occupation of Gaza.”

Bearing Witness to Famine and War

Al Sharif was not just a war correspondent, he was a voice for the suffering that war leaves behind. His coverage often centered on Gaza’s deepening famine, telling stories of families forced to choose between food and survival, and showing the world how starvation had become another weapon of war.

Yet even in the darkest days, he let joy break through. When a ceasefire was announced earlier this year, his followers saw rare footage of him smiling,a brief moment of hope in a sea of despair. That humanity, that willingness to share not only the wounds but also the fleeting relief, made his reporting resonate far beyond the headlines.

Their deaths add to a devastating toll. According to Gaza’s media office, 238 journalists have been killed since the war began on October 7, 2023. The Committee to Protect Journalists reports at least 186 have been killed, calling this conflict the deadliest on record for the press. The CPJ warned that Israel’s repeated pattern of labeling journalists as militants without credible proof “raises serious questions about its intent and respect for press freedom.”

Al Sharif was no stranger to such threats. His life had been under warning from rights groups and UN officials who feared for his safety due to his reporting from the ground. Just minutes before his death, he posted online about the intense bombardment of Gaza City.

Mourning a Relentless Voice

On Monday, crowds gathered at Sheikh Radwan Cemetery in Gaza to bid farewell. Friends, relatives, and colleagues embraced through tears. Al Jazeera called him “one of Gaza’s bravest journalists,” a sentiment echoed by many who saw him as among the last remaining voices telling Gaza’s story to the world.

For those who followed his work, whether in the rubble of Gaza or through the half a million people who read his posts, Anas Al Sharif was more than a reporter. He was a witness, a chronicler of truth in a place where truth itself is under siege.
